hill holder: the worst thing subaru ever made

i know these things were equipped on older models (like mine), discontinued, and now its back to haunt us with the late models. if you don't now what it is, google it up and tell me what you think about it. personally, i think its the stupidest thing ever made and it will kill your brakes if it fails.

well for me, ever since i bought this used 93 impreza, i've been getting brake drag here and there. last night, it just pushed me too far. i was going uphill on ka'ahumanu overpass and the car started going like super duper slow. i thought it was another boost leak or something. so i had the throttle at 100% and boost was building really fast. i left foot braked in half second intervals while holding the throttle. all of a sudden, i get violently shoved to the seat and i look at my avcr: 1.63 kg/cm2 (over 23 psi), afr's: 17.9, knocklight: bright red, and 30-90mph in seconds. that's what you call brake boosting. what a rush!! i came to a stop on the side of the hill and lowered all my values. tried going in gear to move on, car dies. i put it in neutral, it doesn't roll back, it's stuck. i smell the scent of burnt pads and can visually see smoke from the rotors. i'm there for at least 3 minutes of starting up and dying out, trying to ride uphill. so i get out, open the hood, and just cut the cable that controls the mechanism with a diagonal wire cutter. after that, i started the car up, went in 1st, and i was free as a bird.

i got on online and searched on how to disable it, all you gotta do is undo a jamnut and remove the cable. simple as that. mine is gone permanently. good riddens to bad rubbish!! that piece of sh*t almost costed me a new motor and brakes.

subaru should only offer this feature to noobs who can't drive up a hill from a stop. "noobaru" package is what i'd call it.

bastards!!

I don't see nothing wrong, but I mean it's not hard to drive on a hill. I learned on my legacy going up and down makakilo everyday and never had a problem.

I have no problem with the hill holder on the Forester...it's actually a novelty for me. It's standard on all manual transmission Subarus now from what I understand...even on the new STi's...

So what is it supposed to do exactly? While your on a hill with the clutch in it applies the brakes? Kind of redundant isn't it?

It holds the brake for you while you're on a hill so that you can be ready on the clutch and gas pedals when you want to go. Once you start to roll, it releases the brake. It removes the need to do the quick switch of pedals.

For those who want to adjust or disable it, there are instructions on scoobymods.com to do it.

When I had it, I thought it was a genius idea!

well, i still hate it. i like the feeling of rolling back, it tells me my brakes aren't biting all the time. and i'm with Krang on that, too. also, when i drove the car for the first time out on certain days, my steering used to get all jerky and wobbly like my alignment was off. even after i had an alignment done. but i was my LH front brake holding back while the other front wheel drove. it would do it all the time even after adjusting it.

looking at scoobymods.com, that design is for new models. i still have the valve mechanism on the same spot, but my adjustment cable is on my clutch fork. its just hanging out after i cut the som-b*tch. it's probably just old, my car is after all the very first gen impreza released in the US. i'll try so see if i can by-pass it by using a non-hill holder master cylinder (from junkyard) and have hydra-air fabricate a tee.

You know...back when I lived on the top of Ward Ave...I could've REALLY REALLY REALLY used hill hold. I would always do whatever I could to avoid the intersection at the top of Ward because I would either:

1. Get to the light and some dumbass stops behind me right on my bumper...which made me worry about hitting him (even though the damage would be his/her fault).
2. Burn my clutch a little.

Either way, in 3 years there, I only had ONE clean start from a stop at that light. Now I am not the awesomest driver in the world but I am also not crappy but having hill assist would've made life a lot easier.

The only other worst intersection I ever experienced was in Seattle near city hall going up the mountain heading east...that **** got me into a lot of trouble and I was just learning how to drive stick.
