Cruisin’ For Aloha United Way
September 16, 2009
By Sarah Pacheco
Members of the Hawaiian Islands Impreza Club will cruise for a cause this Saturday during the 2009 Aloha United Way Hawaii I-Club Charity Cruise.
Known as HIIC, the club was founded in 2000 as a way for local Subaru enthusiasts to get together and share tips and tales of life behind the wheel.
Since then, the weekly meetings have transformed into an opportunity for members - who hail from all over Oahu, including Kapolei, Makakilo, Ewa Beach, Waipahu, Waikele, Pearl City and Aiea - to put in more than a little elbow grease.
“It is truly like having a second family, and we take that to heart,” said Walter Rivera, who has been a member of HIIC since 2005. “Like other regional chapter clubs (there are 12 others under the parent North American Subaru Impreza Owners Club), our club also takes part in giving back to both the local community and the Subaru community.”
Past efforts have been with the annual Toys for Tots and Hawaii Foodbank drives, but for the last four straight years the club has helped raise money for Aloha United Way via a scenic islandwide cruise.
“We are working hand in hand with Aloha United Way ... in helping to create solutions for the problems in our local communities and putting these solutions to work,” Rivera explained, adding that last year’s event raised close to $1,400, a record they are looking to break this year.
“The event is open to anyone as long as they put the greater cause at hand first,” he said.“The idea of just giving back to the community is our goal, no matter if it’s in a small way or a big way.”
Drivers will meet near the tennis courts at Central Oahu Regional Park beginning at 7:30 a.m. Sept. 19 for a Pre-cruise Swap Meet and car setup. Rollout begins promptly at 9 a.m. and heads toward Servco Subaru in Mapunapuna for a prize drawing. The cruise then heads over the Pali to Windward Mall for a brief break and grub stop and second attempt at prizes. After a drive up Kahekili Highway and photo op at ********’s Hat, the ride ends with shave ice at Matsumoto’s.
Sign up is between 7 and 8:30 a.m. Saturday at the registrar desk at CORP. A minimum $10 donation is required to attend, and one raffle ticket will be given for each donation.
All traffic laws and road etiquette must be followed while on the cruise. Rivera warns that those who speed, race or act offensively will be “frowned upon and belittled by the HIIC flamers.”
For more information on the cruise or the club, contact Rivera (741-8142) or Ted Calvero (232-9204).
Sponsors of the 2009 Aloha United Way Hawaii I-Club Charity Cruise include Servco Subaru, The Pet Depot, ProDigital, MYSUBIE.com, Kartboy and Rad Motorsports, among other contributors.
