High rate of powersteering pump failure?

Hey guys, is it just me, or does the STi (04 model year?) have a high instance of power steering pump failure? In the last two months or so, i've seen about 5 or 6, including two today. Anyone heard anything about this, or is this this just coincedence?

ya howzit Ryan,my pump went out at 60,000 miles when I did my turbo inlet install. The weird thing is that my pump worked fine before I did the turbo inlet install.I was thinking how a turbo inlet install would affect the failure of the pump.Must be a coincedence.

Ryan, thats good to know. I have an 04 @ 38K right now, is there something that I should be on the look out for? What are some of the tell-tale signs?

Lots of fluid leakage around the pump. Might just be the seals going out, but I haven't taken apart any of the pumps, so idk if that's all it is.

It depends on what part of the pump fails.

What part of the pumps are failing?

Power steering issues will generally result in harder steering.

Hey Ryan, Sue's power steering pump went out at 25k miles in her 05LGT. I dunno if it's subaru, but knock on wood my wagon's still fine.
How many of those went out had a stiff front sway-bar? I don't know if that's the culprit, but after i swapped out a beefy FSB, it went out several months after that.

Hey Ed, how's yours holding up, since you are one of those beefy FSB wearing types. Me and my puny 22s are so far so good...knock on wood.

Hey Ryan...

Mine went out at around 58K miles...thanks for changing it out for me...it was weird, because it went out the same time as Brad's...almost exactly.

Those things are expensive!

Power steering is fine (knock on wood). I don't race the car anymore so it's not as stressed every month. Actually, I don't really drive the car that hard on the street. Gotta drive responsibly.

I check the fluid often and haven't noticed any issues.

I don't know if you can isolate the failures to FSB alone. There are too many variables including alignment, maintenance, use/abuse by the driver. IMO you just can't point to the FSB.

Yeah there are far too many variables, but it's no doubt a major contributor in my case.
