Evaporative emission control system malfunction
posted this on ej20 powerplant and maintenance forum but wanted to try here as well.
need help on what this means and if anyone has had this.. service said i can bring it in but wanted to know if anyone else has had this problem and what i need to do to fix it. recently came on when swapping out turbo inlet hose if that helps...

i threw this code when i did vf34 swap. did you upgrade fuel pump or injectors? list mods because that will help break it down. for me it was one of three things. either my gas cap wasnt on, the injectors were not sealing properly, or that there was a problem with the gasket that seals the top of the fuel tank. in other forums ive heard guys say they have chased that code for months with multiple trips to subaru and have never had it resolved. can you feel a difference in performance?

hmm, thanks eric. mods list is pretty much stage 4 minus aftermarket ic..but like i said, came on recently after installing turbo inlet hose.. question, if one of my injectors werent sealed properly, wouldnt it leak gas? and i cant really tell you if i have a loss in performance because i havent pounded my car since i got the turbo installed. never ran right... kinda makes me sick...

my guess would be that its the gasket on top the fuel tank. double check that to see if its ripped. How long ago was the stage 4 installed?
as for the inlet hose, I dont know, i never changed mine or anyone else's one out before. And I dont see how it's related to emissions? unless im missing something.

myron don't feel too bad, eventually you'll get your car running right, when i first installed my upgrades my car didn't run good as well...i had the type h bov that had major leak(kuya jeff,wrx flip sold it to me haha), damn o ring on one of the injectors was ripped, and i leaked gas(so you'll know if this is your problem, which is probably not and my fuel tank gasket was leaking, too bad ed (sub sonic) wasn't here to check it out...because that was one of the problems i had....

when i called ryan at vakamon when i was having the same problem he told me jus reseat the gasket and reset the ecu by unplugging the battery. i did that prolly 3 months ago and havent had a problem since. ps. when you get the cel cleared beat ur car up a little bit so that you will no if you have a change in performance from cel's next time. when i threw that cel it pulled my timing bad...put me in limp home mode but i could tell cuz i knew what i should expect.

hey ralph, eric and jose, along with everyone else here. thank you sooo much for the info. especially you jose. i keep forgeting about nabisco... whats funny is, on nabisco they are saying p0442 is a leak. when i checked that code here it says malfuntion.. it doesnt say leak so yeah. leak sounds more like my problem. either my fuel tank seal or injector or that 1 nipple off of the inlet hose we had to fab to mate up...but thats the blow by hose i believe...

wont be the fuel injector. evap system doesnt deal with raw fuel. it deals with evacuating and purging fuel vapors.
emission system. usually 3 sensors. a fuel tank pressure sensor to monitor tank pressure. a vapor managment valve for the engine to suck up the fuel vapors. and a purge valve to release to atmosphere. if any of them leak. could cause a P0442. or even a fuel pump seal. evap lines leaking, fuel tank leak, filler tube leak.
a possibility you can do is just clear the code and if it comes back, then you definitely do have a leak, which most likely youll have to smoke test to determine exactly where the leak is coming from. not too sure if subaru's run an evap test like ford.

ITS THE INCREDIBLE HOUDINI!!!!!! hey, great info...sounds like you know alot... i really appreciate it. i had a feeling it was my fuel tank.. well, we sorta did break off 1 nut that secures the plate down but i thought it would hold... thanks
