Looking to borrow some Stock GR Hatch tail lights. Mine are painted.

What are the rulles regarding that? painting the hatch lights red would be illegal?

I believe u can't modify your head or tail lights at all because it will no longer be deemed d.o.t approved

Yeah modifying (especially anything to do with adding a coating, tinting or overlay) to your lights is a big no-no. I got busted for that back in the mid-90s in Hawaii Kai.

Really though, if you take those off they won't put that on your mod sheet and when a cop pulls you over for that, you're SOL unless he doesn't read through the sheet.

 

I went with my red painted tails and passed - when I went the tails were a smoky red and it still got through ok. All the times I've been to recon in the past I have never seen them check for a DOT stamp. As long as it's got the proper reflectors, and it's not an obnoxious color, I think you'll be good. Red's always good on tails.

 

^^^True, but I don't want to be the one who doesn't pass.
I mean it's a easy fix. Borrow someone for the RECON inspection and put the Red ones back on after the inspection.

 

Hmm and I thought VA inspections was tough. They let you have tinted lights as long as it can be seen easily from 500 ft in the day and has D.O.T. stamp.. VA Failed me on my turn signal blinkin too fast

 

I would jus play it safe and barrow someone's if possible, it isn't fun always going back and forth to get recon. One of my friends didn't pass because of his dash cover was covering his vin and made him re-schedule
