Hi Jon, shooting with a Nikon D70s with 18-70 lens. This time I let the cam do the job for me
(night landscape mode, ie slow shutter speed and proly aperture set around F5.6 to 8) and no tripod. I was shooting from my building roof, far enough that I have to crop the pix.

Hey Jon, Good Digital SLR cameras (6+ MB) average in the $1000 and above.
Professionals usually get high end models (12MB) for $4000+, which are used mostly for printing in high resolution.
Camera body is not really pricey, but lenses are. Also, consider different brand such as Canon, and do test with the camera at local shop (Handling, weight, etc).
