Question Engine Start-Up Survey

Sorry guys, havent posted a Survey for a while but this dawned on me as a reason of curiosity and paranoya!! This applies to all Subaru makes and models..

I've noticed this for a while but thought of it as nothing...Before leaving my house,I always unless I'm really in a rush warm my engine up either for a 3 to 5 minutes range or until my engine temp needle is at normal temp./Oil Press. gauge is at 20 PSI. But before all this, when I first start it up, I check the Oil level and it is at the "F" line, and hear from my engine bay what seems to sound like a knocking sound but being in the Subaru world for almost a year and 8 months, I do not have in-depth knowledge of the boxer engine. But after conducting the "warming the engine"routine, there is no signs of that sound I describe earlier.

Now am I just being paranoid or is this just a normal routine as the engines is circulating the oil to lube the motor parts... This sounds like more of a question than a survey but I'mjust curious to see too. Also sorry fellow i-clubbers for the lenghty thread but want to be as detailed and descriptive as possible...SORRY Again..

Thanks for looking,

I start up and go unless I have time to start it up and then round up a few last things before I head to work/class. I don't know anything about that noise though...I'll have to check it out next time I preheat my engine

I drive very easy until my aftermarket engine oil gauge is up to temperature. This is usually about 10 minutes of driving, sometimes more.

you guys are posting your 'warm-up times'...pretty sure he's asking about the sound from the engine for the first few minutes upon a cold start. If this is correct, I have the same noise. Makes a ticking sound like it would if it's low on oil. But I'm told this is common on the subaru engines. Hope that helped.

i think this gentleman here nailed it, the boxer engine is a loud engine, so u may just be having a bit of the paranoiya, but if your still worried about it have it checked!

might just be the altenator. from what i understand, subarus are also know to have wierd sounding alternators. i know the one in my04 wrx made kind of a ticking sound untill it was warmed up. after that you could only hear it if you opened the hood. just start your car, open the hood, and check it out. also note that the engine idels at a higher rpm when it is first started. this causes it so shake a little more and could also explain the sound. just try to track it down b4 you go pay someone to tell you your catch can is loose. Yeah, I've got a 2003 WRX and know the noise you mean, makes you think there's not enough oil, but there always is, thinks it's just the boxer. I always try to warm the car up before driving anyway, especially the winter when it's minus 20!!!!!
