That's all relative to the tuner and location w/ 93 octane more than likely.
squeezing every last ounce of power out on a tune, usually isn't the best idea.

I think an 18G is fairly large for a 2.0. My monster pnp VF34 is a pretty big turbo for a 2.0 in my opinion. But the turbo size is dependent on the supporting mods. TMIC? Forget about the 18G in my opinion. FMIC? 18G will be a bit laggy, but it will pull damn hard when it comeson.
What octane will you be running? That's a big deal. I have some Torco I add when I'm feeling 'frisky'.
Street ride, road racing or dragstrip? Again, a big deal. Street ride forget the 18G. Road racing, I'd still go a bit smaller. Dragstrip is where the 18G would shine.
If I had the opportunity to aquire an engine for my WRX that was free, and I had my choice, I wouldn't choose a 2.5. I would honestly prefer a 2.0, 2.2, or 2.35 that revs willingly to 8K or beyond. Why?
Shifting takes time. The STI 2.5 makes great power and torque, but it just doesn't rev freely (and high enough) in my opinion and requires too much shifting. I'd prefer a wider powerband with a quick revving motor and less shifting. That being said a small powerband with massive torque can be great.
Anyone watch the 24 Hours of LeMans this year. The top six cars were diesels. Not a wide powerband, but the amount of torque is magnificent. Unfortunately even a 3.0 SVX motor doesn't make a lot of torque.

I'm at 292/297 awhp/awtq on 93 with a very safe AFR. That's a stage 4+ (fmic) with a VF34. I don't think you want a bigger turbo for a "responsive" daily driver.
I would suggest you get a ride in a car with a larger than stock turbo to see how you like it. I would also suggest that it is a larger than stock turbo that is tuned properly. After a track day at Campbell Industrial Park (sorry it isn't there anymore) I took a friend with a nearly identical setup (VF30) for a ride in my car and he couldn't believe the difference. This was before my car was tuned, but it made almost identical power, it was just a bit on the lean side (there were no AWD dynos on Oahu at the time). I had a wideband so I knew it was close.
Another thing I'd recommend is to consider making your car lighter. There are a lot of ways to do this. Even with all the additional hardware I've added to my car, it weighs 2960 without the sub boxes.
If you are considering upping your displacement in the future, you could go with a big turbo now and "live with it" until your displacement catches up with the turbo, but it will be laggy. You can do a "budget" stroker with a crank and some rods which will give you a bit more grunt while still revving well. I'd talk with Ryan about this or other options. He'll give you the right advice for your goals without trying to sell you something you don't need.

san's car was definitely on weight watchers when he was here. He found everything possible to remove.
I agree that you shouldn't get something to big for what you're planning.
An EVO III 16G is what I'm planning on getting in the near future but a VF34 or even a regular 16G would be ok. It all comes down to the tune. I've had a VF30 on my WRX engine and it was great with an OTS AP map.

running a vf39 right now w/ 565cc injectors, sti top and a fuel pump. did 258 whp @ 18 psi running 91 oct on a mustang dyno. afaik on a dynopack that would equal around 290-300 whp. So with an 18g its definitely doable without meth. its really all about the tune

One thing I asked about before that you didn't answer was TMIC or FMIC? That would influence the size of the turbo for me. I'd run a smaller turbo on a TMIC and a bigger turbo on a FMIC (especially in a warmer climate).
Even on the stock turbo with the FMIC I was as fast or faster than STIs at the track, and I had never tracked a car before. I only had the FMIC, boost controller, headers, intake and TBE. Needless to say I wasn't popular with some.
I would agree with iNfEk that a 16G or slightly larger is probably where you want to be for a "responsive" daily driver. Krang is also correct in that the tune is critical. Research twice (at least) and buy once. Read everything available.

i do not want a FMIC.. unless there is a way I can not have to cut into my bumper support.
at this point i'm not looking to buy until after january 09 because of my trip to hong kong it'll set me back some money.
thus far.. i'd assume the EvoIII 16g might fit pretty good. a larger TMIC probably the turboXS.. injectors 650cc+ and fuel pump which i'd assume are the basic supporting mods.

APS / TurboXS don't need to cut bumper support but the bumper skin. It also comes with a psuedo bumper beam

I'm running a perrin ebcs, 565pinks, stock tmic, injen intake, hks down, invidia cbe, gruppe-s y pipe, and a vf 34. 305 whp SAFELY. I rally this car so I wanted good spool and response with the strength to get me down the straights,(when there are any). did I mention 322wtq. I go to 19.5 and taper to 16.5, all this is due to an open ecu tune. I love the vf 34, Just pulled it out after 6 sessions/races, and no play in the shaft nothing. I just have misfire issuses,(like 50 percent of us). Go with a 34 man, their responsive and last.
