Drilling in trunk to mount a sub?
I want to mount a small sub in the trunk but I'm worried about drilling holes in the trunk floor. Is there anything I can damage if I'm not careful? Looking at the service manual, it seems that the gas tank is pretty far forward, near the rear seats - is this correct? Anything else I should be aware of before I start making holes in the trunk? Thanks.

Gas tank is under the rear seat. Mount your sub, figure out where you want to drill, then look underneath the car. The contours of the pan make it pretty obvious where you'll be coming through.

If your tires are not factory size, your spare is useless. Remove it and put a thin truck box in the hole. It will stay put and it leaves you with cargo room.

Thanks for the input and for the pics. Wow, that box takes up a lot of space, I need to get something a little smaller.
While I'm on the topic, has anyone installed (or has seen an installation of) a sub with some kind of quick release mechanism, in case I need to clear out the trunk? I was going to wander around Lowes to see if I can figure something out but I don't want to come up with anything too ghetto or reinvent the wheel if there is already a good solution out there.

exactly what i did with mine.. i have only a 10" and mounted it more towards the rear seats. i drilled holes in the through the upper liner and using 2 L brackets and some small screws drilled it in.. did this about a year ago and still all is sturdy and works fine. not sure about the quick release, but sounds like a good idea!

What do u mean by quick release? if u mount ur amp somewhere other then ur trunk and just run speaker wire to the box in ur trunk, all u need to do is disconnect the wires to the speaker terminal and u can pull ur box out. I've always connected my amp to my box and removed all the wires whenever I wanted to take the box out for more space (5 min tops w allen key n screwdriver). Drilling holes to mount subs to ur frame takes alot longer to take out imo. If ur a chick and need space cause u always have ur house in ur car/trunk then thats a different story

I do have the amp under the driver's seat, so it's easy to disconnect the sub from the amp. I was just thinking that it might be handy to be able to remove the sub without using a screwdriver if I need to do it quickly on the fly, like if I bought something unexpectedly large and need the whole trunk. I may not matter anyway, as I think I'm going to buy a Pioneer TS-SWX251 10" sub in a sealed enclosure (I don't like the boominess of a ported enclosure). It's meant to stand upright or go face down, which I like as the speaker itself won't be subject to accidental damage. Also, the enclosure is strong enough that stuff can be piled on it if necessary, so there may be no need to ever remove it from the trunk.

If I ever get a sub again its going to be a w6 8" in a sealed enclosure with a 500w mono amp. Can easily fit all of that in your spare tire well. Don't go thinking you need a big sub to get big sound, you just need a high power woofer.

Mount it in the spare tire well, use the spare tire hold down screw and cap. Drill a hole the box, seal the area after. All come out hidden after. This was done by me and Kevin at Impact I Hilo

I just installed my system not too long ago. I got a powered sub from sound ordinance and installed it under my passenger seat with some velcro. I did the same to the amp under the drivers seat.
