He said the accident occurred about 3:50 a.m.
Police are turning Kaneohe-bound traffic around at Valley View Drive.
The deaths this morning bring to 16 the number of traffic fatalities on Oahu so far this year. That compares with nine traffic fatalities during the same period last year.
Police traffic investigators estimated the car was traveling at more than 100 mph when the crash occurred.
By about 7 a.m., they had completed their investigation at the site.
Police spokesman Capt. Frank Fujii said the four-door Audi sedan was speeding when it hit the embankment on the left, then went airborne before slamming into the tunnel wall on the right.
At about 7:20 a.m., firefighters began the grim task of extricating bodies from the wreckage.
"We're hoping there are no other people in that car," Fujii said, adding that investigators could not be sure until several of the victims' bodies are removed.
Witnesses estimated the age of those killed in the crash at between 20 and 30 years, Fujii said.
"Our message to people is, 'Don't speed. Speed kills.' This is just a waste of life," Fujii said.
As of 7:20, police were estimating that the Kaneohe-bound lanes of the highway will remain closed for another hour or two

dude, they'd have to be ground beef if the car looked like that. i know i do short burst of speed once in a while on the freeway but looking at these photos just kills me. i bet the night marchers did it. one of them stuck their foot out to trip the car into the wall.

You know, to cause damage like that, the driver must have been going very fast. And if so, I have a hard time sympathizing with him. If he was really speeding that fast, he should have known the consequences.
I do have sympathy for the passengers though.

Quote: "Early TT models gained press coverage for a series of high-speed accidents in Europe. Reported crashes and related fatalities occurred at speeds in excess of 110 mph (180 km/h) during abrupt lane changes or sharp turns. Both the coupe and roadster models were recalled in late 1999/early 2000 to improve predictability of the car's handling at very high-speeds"
Just before the Wilson Tunnel, there is a slight bend in the freeway, that bend mixed with his speed was enough to send it out of control.
Either way, my condolences to the family of those involved....
