Possibly. If the fans are thin enough then mounting them on the bottom pulling air through would be better. I can't help but think that those fans are blocking a lot of surface area up top.

I've seen this before as well. I question how much air is actually getting through to the IC, especially at higher speeds when it needs the air most. Next, I wonder if the fans produce enough airflow needed to sufficiently cool things down. I'd say to keep things simple and functional...I won't doubt Subaru's engineers.

Engineer's are fine, its the accountants that I worry about. Many times the reason we get less than an ideal product is because someone said that it would cost too much with no appreciable return.

No offense to accountants out there .

Aren't the fans actually blocking airflow?

I would think so. Kinda reminds me of the "Tornado; force-air-down-your-intake y0!" thingy.

I vote that they're causing more of a restriction/problem at speed than they are helping at idle/standstill.

Maybe a big SPAL radiator fan spinning at 10k rpm's, but the electrical load from that badboy would probably offset any gains in power from the intercooler.

TMICs work well

once they get moving again. I would agree that those fans are hurting high speed cooling but probably help at stoplight situations. I really like the EVO's stock FMIC. I like the hood vent too.

No, just use your water sprayer.

i was realy thinking of doing this but never mind, you guys are right. i feel the back of my comp and it just feels like a slight breeze. oh, does anyone know how to do an on/off switch for i/c spray, instead of the 2 second spray burst. i was reading on nasioc and one guy said he got the greddy remote switch and wired it to turn the i/c motor on and off instead of the short burst.

I think you should Email this guy and ask him how effective this setup is for him. Maybe he has some dyno time comparing w/ the fans on and w/ them off. Ask the man b4 you totally dismiss this idea.

Isn't the optimum IC cooling achieved with about 15mph winds??

That's why WRXs have a governor at 140mph because the airflow seperates from the hood and no longer provides enough flow through the scoop and IC, then the intake charge temp goes up.

Can't remember where I read this .. but seems right

Seems like a puller design combined with a spray system would be effective in stop and go and at higher "legal" speeds...

Also seems like something that would be one of my last mods before appearance mods .. squeezing the last little bit out of it.

Just my thoughts

Knight is right...hey I rhymed!

Actually, if you're gonna keep the top mount as the stock IC or the myriad of upgrade top mounts, you should do three things from a purely physics standpoint.

1. Buy the bigger airscoop from the '04 models or the aftermarket. The '04 model scoop was designed in part by the Rally folks because it is more functional and draws in air at higher speeds (though it is a little flappy at such speeds and of course looks gaudier IMO).

2. Buy the Zero Sports air foil (sorry dunno where to find a picture right now...my friend in the mainland has a friend that fabricated one just like it for his rex and he's an aerospace engineer). For those who don't know...it basically has three flaps that distribute the airflow across the entire IC. The stock setup actually only has high airflow over about 1/3 of the IC (the back portion).

3. Water Spray is another great pick-up as well, but that's a product we all know about! If you don't please consult the system on the current STi (basically water helps cool the IC just like sweat evaporating from our bodies helps cool us)

Getting either is a great step and will solve much of your cooling (i.e. heat soak) woes but getting both is the best setup if you wanna keep the top mount and not go front mount (hey some people like to be different).
