alcohol is a little to dry and has no lubricating properties at all. The only way to check is to remove the IACV again when the car is COLD.

bump! hey guys. sorry to jack the thread (even tho its old). I am having the same exact problem as Mark and have already cleaned the IAC and replaced the gasket. Mark if you are reading this, what was the fix? If anyone else has any advice it would be appreciated. I'm going to test the connectors on the IACV and the Neutral switch to the transmission now and see if that leads to anything but if you have info speak up!!!

well i was up till 2am last night messin with the car. i removed the intercooler and tested the neutral switch on the transmission (still not sure of the readings it gave me). then i reattached everything and double checked for vacume leaks. i also took the IAC valve off and cleaned it again. the first time i cleaned it i didnt try to move the valve for fear of damaging it but i was pissed off so i played around with it and got a little more grime out. after soaking it and trying PB blaster instead of just WD40 to clean it it seemed to move freely and i think the PB blaster got a bit more rust/corrosion out as well as lubricated it. i reseated the valve and the car started right up and seemed to warm up/idle normally. it burned off a little bit of coolant that got in the throttle body (a bit of white smoke) and then once warm i took it for a long test drive. it ran fine and then this morning i started it up again and it was running fine. sooooooo hopefully its a problem solved but i'll keep you guys updated if it does it again.

I had to buy another valve.
ok to check for vacume leaks
try taking out the valve and cover one of the hole with duct tape.

Put it back on and try starting the car.
If STARTS then you have a vacume leak.
If it DONT START then you dont have a leak.

As for me, my car didnt start so the problem was the valve. I bought a new one and now its fine. good luck

ya so far the car is running great. not sure if the second cleaning and physically loosening the valve so it rotated better was the key, or if i just inadvertantly fixed an unknown vacume leak when i took off the intercooler. i think the cleaning is what did it cause it was pretty much stuck untill i rotated it by hand a bunch of times and cleaned it out more. hopefully it fixed it for the forseeable future but if not ill just get a replacement valve.

yup. I did pretty much the same thing but using carb cleaner instead. I thought it would be assumed that the rocking piece in the center should move freely but not easily. The new valve isn't cheap though so do what you can with your original. The quality if material used in the new type isn't as good as the original (feel wise). So I'm trying to stick with it.
