Bad Gas From Tesoro on Cooke St.

Got 5 gallons worth of supposed "92 octane" SWILL from Tesoro on Cooke & King today.

After marinating in my tank for a couple of hours my CEL started blinking like crazy (UTEC knock routine) whenever I would get under higher boost levels (even at minimal throttle angle).

Played with my maps for a 1/2 hour or so tonight (this morning) until I decided to throw some 100 octane Shell in the car to see if it was an octane issue. Sure enough it cured my det. problems.

Wow. Worst part is the det. was never audible even though the knock count on the UTEC was high enough to suggest that catastrophic damage could occur under prolonged detonation.

Be careful out there, folks!

oh man can you hold the gas station responsible for their gasoline causing your engine damage....you can prove it by testing their gas before them knowing....but that would be kindda hard.....hmmmmm

Uhm, ... not to try and totally be a smart ***, ........

But .... Tesoro is probably one of the Worst gas' you can put in your car here!!! I can't believe you'd do that to your babies!!!!

Shell or 76 are the "only" way to go on island, imo.

How is Tesoro one of the worst gasoline brands? How do you rate brands?

Wait a minute...theres only TWO refineries here on this island. Chevron and Tesoro. I'm pretty sure 76/Shell will use Tesoro refineries. I may be wrong though.

I'm with Sean 76/shell is the only way to go with a turbo'd motor on this island.

yup, ... I'm a mad man. I would crank my boost controller up a little at a time to "hear" knock. I used my highly calibrated, special military issue hearing to listen for it, ... and I also used my highly calibrated, military abused *** to "feel" for a pull in timing.

That sounds far fetched doesn't it? .... well, that's what I'd do.
And I guess it worked well enough to get me 13.6/7 timeslips w/mbc, intake, and exhaust.

I'm kinda with sean on this one. I have a friend that works at the Tesoro plant and he also mentions that the the gas they produce can sometimes be a little sketchy. I only use Shell gas and I don't have any noticeable knock or timing retard when doing datalogs.

BTW...i don't like 76 either. Reason being they have only one hose for all 3 grades. What if the person before you filled up with 87. Could there still be some 87 gas in that hose when you fill up? I don't want to take that risk.

yeah, .... I just drive in circles until I find a pump that just pumped out 92 oct.

about the refinery thing, ... there may be two refineries, ... but there are a lot more than two recipes. The gas is 'made' to each company's specification.

(edited b/c I can't spell )
