However, I believe my turbocharger was defective from the factory.

My stock turbo seems to be doing fine (*knocks on wood*) and I didn't notice anything out of the ordinary during my install/removal/re-install.

I am just unlucky.

Thanks for the guide though! I've saved it on the hard drive for future reference.
