I think I need a new Video card for my loptop. I just picked up Half-life2 to kill some time.....(I'm away from home)......and it's running a little choppy. I have the game set on low settings

Pentium(R)4 3.20GHz, 1GB RAM w/ a ATI Mobility Radeon 7000 IPG video card <---I think this is the weak link.

Any Ideas?

im not 100% sure but i thought that laptops come with on board video. so it cant really be changed, maybe memory can be upgraded, again im not sure....

this is why im not much of a laptop person.....

 

it may be possible to allocate more memory to your video by changing bios settings. i wouldnt know til i see ur bios settings. some onboard video will use system ram for video ram. if your motherboard has memory modules integrated on it for video, it cant be changed. one way to tell is to look at your computer's specs by right clicking properties on the my computer icon. check how much memory is there. if it says less than what you know is actually installed, then something is grabbing memory from your system ram, most likey the video card. for example, if you know you have 512mb of ram on your system, but it says only 504mb, it maybe the video card using 8mb for video ram. if not, then the video card is using memory elsewhere which means it cant be ajusted. not sure if it can be upgraded. hope this helps a bit.

I have 1024mb of ram but when I look it says 960mb of ram.....so I'm using a lot somewhere I just don't know where....???? I hope I can use some ram for video, that would rock.

wow, does that mean i was right?? i hope giving more memory helps you out, but from my experience, it didnt do much, i needed a faster GPU.

 

if you know how to get in your cmos settings, or bios settings, there might be a ajustment where u can choose how much to memory to share. if not then maybe its a default setting you cant change.

you can also check if you have DMA (Direct memory access) enabled on your harddrive, which probably is. to do this, go to device manager which is in my computer properties. go to:

-ide ata/atapi controllers
-primary ide channel
-secondary ide channel

right click on both primary and secondary for properties go to the avanced tab and select "DMA if available" setting on transfer mode. if it is already enabled, then that was a waste of time, Lol

 

Your onboard video is using 64MB... try to check on the bios settings if you can change to more... 128MB for example... or other graphics settings...

 

Yeah unless you have a special setup, your video is on board, so you cannot change your video car without a new motherboard. More money than it is worth. You need the absolute newest computers to play Halflife 2, so I'd just find another game. Sorry to tell you that.

 

I just bought a Toshiba Satellite P35 series. I have a ATI Radeon 9000 Video Card. I really wanted a Sony Vaio because they have DEDICATED Video which is what you want. I have 748 RAM now but going to upgrade to 1GB later. Your stuck with the video that you because it is permanent on the motherboard. I believe tweaking the setting may help but not sure how much. I'm not a super computer guru but this is what I know over the past few wks of researching for my computer purchase. Later.

 

I can't give anymore suggestions than what was posted already. Just like what was stated, check the bios and you should be able to alter the amount of ram allocated to video from the system ram.
