im no electrician, but is the power your using to your fridge grounded and coming from a grounded outlet? if not, that is one problem. another problem is that the extension cord can't handle putting as much current as the fridge needs causing a short (fire!!). the fridge cords that you plug directly into the wall are pretty beefy vs. the extension cords that aren't.

since you're in an old building, you're not required to have a GFI unless you're doing other upgrades. when you replace the outlet, check the wiring to see what kind of voltage and amps the line is carrying. there may be a short in the wires and not the outlet. also, check your lease agreement to see if the repair is covered in the agreement.
if you really need help fixing it, lmk and i can help.

i thought GFI are only required if the outlet is within 6 FT of a water source like a sink or outside.
but strange for an outlet just to crap out without constant plugging in and out (no wear like a light switch) is weird.
but like what everyone else said. pick up a new 3 prong outlet and slap it in there. pretty straight forward. just match up the existing black, white and copper wires to the locations on the new outlet. oh yeah don't forget to turn off the power at the circuit breaker. much easier than changing out a stereo. i might be able to help you out saturday morning or possibly friday if work lets me out. let me know.
