If I was to buy an AMD 64 3400/3500+ processor, compatible motherboard and 1Gb branded RAM for a decent price, where would I buy it from??

Dont waste your money on the board unless it supports duel channel DDR memory. It's a little more expensive but it's worth the money.
I always buy all my stuff from newegg.com personally.
as for the processor go with either a 3000+ or a 3400+ all the rest of the AMD 64's 2800-3300 dont perform any better then the 3000+, and anything above 3400+ doesn't really speed things up, plus the price really starts to jump after that.
There is a few more things you would want to look at but it's too long to post here. If you have any questions i'll go into more detail.
