Angry 06 Strut Problem

I was hearing a funny knocking noise on the left rear tire area, kept on listening to it until it got louder and louder it will only sound when I was driving, could hear it very well when I was in neutral cruising.

Every bump in the road it would sound like there is a peice of medal inside just clunking around. I took it to the dealership and they inspected it.

Told me that the strut was defective, with the mount. So they ordered it for me and I am still listening to that racket in the back. I mean is it common for STI's to have these kind of problems, any year?

I am just pissed that I spent all this money and its already broke. Just thought it would last longer than six months.

ironically i put 04 STi(springs/struts) in wifeys wrx - and 20,000 miles later we hear clunking- simply put, STi/wrx = aftermarket suspension and nothing else.

Unhappy

Interresting... sounds like the legacy of "STi Strut clunking noise" prolifered in the 06 as well...

I third that...mine never clunked with stockers or aftermarket. Add to that, the aftermarket ones I was using on my STi had REALLY stiff spring rates

Talking Strut clunking noise

OH YESSS! I have had my share of this problem. I have replaced 4 of my struts now and i am getting the knocking sound from my front right strut now. I have an 05 STi.

I have been trying to research this problem for a long time now. Nobody knows the cause of it. My first one to go out was before i started modding. Then after i started modding it seems to be an ongoing problem now. I dont know if maybe when one goes out it causes the others to go out too? So my solution is to get some coilovers. I am saving up to get some Tein Flex. So it isnt just me, others are having this problem too. It does seem to effect handling slightly because after i have gotten them replaced i can tell the difference right off the bat. Not anything to dramatic but just enough to notice. Let me know what you find out man.

I think what happens is that the seal in the strut goes out and it just kind of wobbles and makes that sound. SO ANNOYING!!!! hope that helps.

So anybody know if coilovers will fix this problem?????

FEEDBACK PLEASE!!!

Laterz,
Eli

yea my fronts are irritating me as well on an 05 sti, i havent been to the dealer cuz i have springs. nabisco has a 30+ page thread on this, lots of info there.... some say it sounds like popcorn poping lol

my solution is to lift up the car, remove the dust boot, spray the shaft with lps2 (its like wd-40), let it soak, and the car will be clunk free for a while..

also, some say lifting the car up will stop the clunking for a few miles..

How many struts have gone out on you juniorsti? So what is the sure shot solution for this problem so it will never happen again? Coilovers?

coil overs will probably fix it, but check your endlinks and swaybar mounts before u buy coilovers.

my rear stopped clunking when i took out my rsb, but the front does ocasionally, none of them have been replaced.

Got my both of rear ones replaced 3 times under warranty. The noise stopped for more than a year. It came back this year and I am running aftermarket springs.

I will not do anything about it, just live with it
