03 wrx with v8 ej207. bad maf?

Hello. I have a 03wrx with a v8 ej207 swap. I did it back in 2008. Its just been my daily driver. Been short on cash, so my Scooby project has been going slower then I had planned.

I tuned it myself so it was safe to drive. Ran fine for the last 4 years. Then just recently it started idling really rich. Stumbling, at idle, lacks power at low rpm, and so on. I thought it was the o2 sensor but I changed that and its still doing it. I don't wanna keep throwing parts at it! LoL

The maf sensor is the stock 03 wrx one. Wondering of anyone has a spare I can try out, or swap in to see if it fixes my problem....

I'm in salt lake area.

Mahalo,

I also have a version 8 swap. I'd come take a look, but my car is down as well. Waiting on a few suspension parts to replace. Is it throwing any codes?

Dunno if it matters but I THINK I have a spare from an 05 Rex lying around. If anything you try cleaning that maf?

Thx for posting guys.

No. Its not throwing any codes. The wideband shows it idles right around 14.7 when I first start it up, then after about 5 min it starts to run way worse, and the wideband starts showing 10.5 to 12 afr's. This is what made me think it was the o2 sensor. But, now that I have a new o2, Im thinking it must be the maf.

I'm gonna do a leak test of the intake. But, I think a leak would be making me lean, not rich at idle.

I haven't cleaned the maf yet. I looked at it. Doesn't look oily or anything. I'll go buy some maf cleaner and try. Thanks for the suggestion.

Have you tried resetting the ecu? Could have learned some bad stuff and is trying to compensate.

Tbh though sounds like a vac leak post turbo.

update...

^^^ Yes. I reset the ecu. Thanks for the suggestion. I was thinking the same thing...

So update. I cleaned the maf today. It was pretty bad. But, unfortunately that didnt fix it.

I've been thinking it could be a intake leak too so....., I pressure tested it and yep! Sure enough... I could hear a leak. I sprayed everything with soapy water, and found two leaks. I have a crack in my intercooler, and my aftermarket bov is leaking.

Unfortunately I threw my stock bov away, so I'm gonna take this one off and try to fix it. If not, then I'll have to buy a new one I guess.

As far as the crack in the intercooler. I think I'm gonna try to weld it.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. I'll keep you posted....

I got my wideband and egt gauge installed, my flash cable, ROM raider, and all..... I can wait to tune this thing up and get her dialed in.

Ditch the aftermarket bov. Too bad you threw the stock one away, the jdm ones are good for over 20psi.

Yea, I'm kinda pissed it got thrown away too! Errr... Oh, well. Trying not to be a hoarder makes me throw stuff away sometimes. LoL.

This bov is supposed to be really good. I like the fact that I could tune the amount of bypass air. Has like 10 settings from full bypass to full recirculate.

I took the bov completely apart and cleaned it out. It was pretty dirty. I don't have a oil catch can, so it was all gunked up.

The orings looked OK still. All parts had very little wear on them. We'll see if it still leaks....

Leak tested again today. BOV is good now. However, air is leaking from around the fuel injectors where they go into the intake manifold. Looks like its time for new o-rings.

I still need to get a crack fixed in my TMIC.

I sprayed everything with soapy water and the only other leaks I saw were some hoses that weren't clamped.

Its a slow process finding and fixing all these leaks.....

I ended up pulling my intake manifold. One side was leaking. Now that I have the manifold off I decided to give it a new coat of paint. The red was all worn away on the top.

Looking at the valve covers, they are leaking just a bit on both sides, so I guess I have to do that while the manifold is off and they are easy to get to. I googled it and found out the ej207 uses a special valve cove gasket, so I ordered them.

I have a pair of top feed Perrin fuel rails laying around collecting dust from my old motor build, so I decided to install those too. The only catch is that they don't fit the ej207 because it doesn't have the tumble valve risers on the intake manifold, so I'm custom fabricating some brackets. Looks like I'll also need to install phenolic spacers so the fuel rails clear the avcs solenoid plug.

Man! I didn't mean to do all of this... LoL. I was just trying to fix an intake boost leak.

Funny how that goes.....

Do you know the part # of the gasket? I'll have to do mine soon.

Edit:
Saying it's broken is just another way of justifying upgrades :P

Yeah... this one time I wanted to replace a bent lateral link.....

Ended up:

Replaced all 4 hubs
Replaced all 4 brake calipers and rotors
All suspension bushings
All suspension arms

In that process I replaced my bent lateral link so it was a success right?
