Difficult to put in Reverse on cold start

So title says it all, always on a cold start it is such a pain in the *** throwing it into Reverse. I'll push the clutch in and can't put it into gear, but after I have drove the car as little as down the street I am able to put it into reverse no problem.

Reverse is notoriously hard to grab. Sometimes it helps me if I put it in first or second before I try for reverse. I am assuming your car has had it's regular flush of gear oil?

When was the last time your transmission was serviced?

Do you know if your car has aftermarket shifter bushings? I had the same issue with a brand spanking new 2013 wrx with stock shifter bushings. Once I went to Kartboy front/rear shifter bushings no problems.

As queeg9k has said, Reverse gear is somewhat hard to get into.

Shifter bushings can help a bit, least focus the force of moving the shifter better. Just feels nicer if nothing else.

I put a heavier **** on recently and I think it helped too, even if it's just an in-hand feeling of something more sturdy.

My 5MT gives me trouble, at all speeds and temperatures (under and outside the hood) getting into 1st, which shares a synchro with reverse.

Just have to pop it 2-1 sometimes, and gently force it in getting into reverse.

Just curious, does you car wrr-wrr-wrr and wobble with felt torque in when reverse? Mine does that.

+1 on heavier ****, that has helped too.

Wrr-wrr-wrr as a continous sound? I don't recall of any sound.. Isn't this because its a straight cut gear? unless your talking about something else...

This, except I use 5th gear. And I'm pretty sure I do it every single time i'm looking for reverse, because it's always a ***** to get into.

It's funny how technically a lighter, longer shift arm makes more sense mechanically, vis being a lever and all that, but a short and heavy action just feels nicer. I've an OEM short shifter and it's well enough for me.

As for the sound, probably the straight cut gear is a big part of it, and while in first I get similar wrr-wrrs too, and continuously (it seems a little load dependent though). Short of cracking the tranny open I'm not sure what's going on inside, but suspect previous owner (I'm #4) abuse to be the cause. I get brief grinding in 4th at high RPM too.
