It's a baffle to 'tune' the noise out of the induction ~ I cut mine off way back when I was running a box. Filled it with black silicon... looked way better, but sure got noisy!

The correct term for the wart is a Helmholtz resonator 
it's used to reduce the induction noise by generating its own frequencies thus canceling out others.
