hi people,i have just bought a 1.8i 5 door impreza 1993 uk model,i love the car but am sissapointed in the power it runs smooth and sounds ok but has no acceleration at all,i mean its like a stunned slug!,it will do good top speeds on the motorway but does not set off as well as i think it should,if it was a carbouretted motor i would say it was the eccelerator pump,or the advance retard not working properly but because it is injection i know nothing!,i am used to working on motorcycles also it does more miles to the gallon than it should which makes me think there is not enough fuel getting through maybe, dont know how to set it up or anything, also it had a new cam belt not long before i bought it so i wondered if there was a chance that it was a tooth out maybe, any help would be much appreciated thanks cliff......

Get rid of the silencer that goes from the stock airbox into the fender well. That will help.
Other than that, everything ive done hasnt worked much. Just do an engine swap if you are thinking of spending any considerable amount of money into power for the car...

for the cost of a swap it would involve a lot less headaches to move up to a 2.2l L model or even an RS, and he'd get all the upgraded hardware to go with the power. Plus saving on the stress and PITAs.

I wouldn't go to a 2.2L. I own one. The heads on the 2.2 only have one exhaust port on each side. This really ruins the good subie sound, and diminishes the value of buying headers. So, I would either try to get a 2.5 OR, if you are low on $$ get simple things like underdrive pulley, exhaust, (including the 2.5RS headers which will fit) intake stuff, plug wires, lighter wheels (if you have steel ones). And talk to Cobb tuning and see if they can grind some cams for your car..although that is pricey. Also be careful if you go for an intake. Keep the stock black box that sits where the intercooler would. It dampens harmonic vibrartions that have been known to destroy the MAF sensor. I made that mistake and paid for it. Just get a panel filter, or buy an adapter from kartboy.com and buy a cone filter. Furthermore, the 95 1.8L is really light, so good suspension will make that car handle like a dream! Good luck with whatever desicion you make!

The guys profile says he's in the UK so why would he upgrade to a hard to find 2.5RS or a 2.2L when there are so many EJ20 drivetrains to be had over there already. Thats why I say go for the EJ20 drivetrain convesion. Get with the guys at www.scoobynet.co.uk about some upgrades.

From a money and location stand point, I feel you should go with a 2.0 conversion. Unlike the u.s., you'd be hardpressed to find a readonably priced 2.5 drivetrain in the u.k. Unless you LIKE spend huge wads of cash......
