Puff Of Smoke
Howdy,
I haven't posted in awhile, because my Subie is so friggin' reliable! Okay, here it is: my son was driving over the hill (Sierras) with my '99 Impreza Outback. He downshifted into 3rd gear (instead of going into 5th) at speed. His comment: "White smoke came out of the engine compartment!" Later, my other son said he thought the engine was smoking a little when he stopped for gas... Okay... hmmm... so, I checked the oil level (normal), checked the fluids (okay), belts and hoses (no visible leaks), but... it looks like there is oil/fluid/wetness on the bottom of the chassis and oil pan.
The car runs fine, lots of power, no strange noises, and no more "smoke". Does anyone have any idea WHAT is going on? I am not TOO worried, since the car sounds normal, runs normal, and isn't doing anything weird... I'm just doing a "just in case" reality check with you guys.
Thanks,
Zeke

Actually yes, I tihnk I have an idea, the boots on the CV axles are very weak and if they rip, they throw grease up on the engine, and the grease gets burned off and smokes. Unfortunately, I have yet to come up with a fix for it.

Hey, thanks, Scoobylvr!!! Yep, it was the right side CV boot, dripping oil on the catalytic converter.
Quick question: do you have the URL of a parts house that sells aftermarket, quality CV boots? (ones
that are stronger/better made than the factory boots).
Thanks again for the brilliant diagnosis. Off to fix my car.
regards,
Zeke
