Intakes: What's the difference, really?
Hey guys. I was just wondering what the differences are amongst the number of available intakes on the market. I mean, it's essentially a tube with an air filter on it. So why do some cost upwards of $200 and you can get no-names on eBay for $30-$40? Why pay the extra money? What's the difference?

Most of the intakes with the cone filter on the end just suck hot air from the engine compartement, which isn't good. For example Cobb's design using the PRM filter pulls cold air directly from the wheel well, which is much cooler.
sorry, i am too lazy to search. but i remember seeing someone actually did a test (measurement) on different intakes including stock air box. The result was that stock box wasn't much hotter than your after market. It was measuring at different speed (different air flow). Do a search on NASIOC and you should be able to find something. it was a VERY detail report. good luck.

I guess what I'm really asking is how can one aftermarket intake be different from another? A tube with an air filter should be no different than another tube with the same air filter. Why pay over $200 for big names like Injen when you can get a cheapie on eBay for a quarter of that price? There must be a difference. Airflow? Sound? Does the difference in performance, if any, really justify the difference in price?

We've been through the intake thing already several times, search for the threads. Bottom line is if you are looking to gain performance, look elsewhere. If you want to hear the turbo better hack up (snorkus removal) the stock one. Unless you have a bigger turbo and are making big power, don't get an aftermarket intake. There are problems with CEL's and such that just do not make it worth it.
Edit: And we have also discussed why CAI's have little or no effect with a turbo car. Well some bad effects possibly, but certainly no good ones. Spend your money elsewhere man.

Kman, this is the NA forum. Intakes actually do have a positive affect on MAP sensor based Scoobies, although a small one. I personally have a GanzFlow I got used. It makes a little more power and a lot more noise.

Yes they make a huge difference. Shows up on dynos. The cobb so far is the best for pure performace, followed by the injen and custom made throttle body intakes. The J-bend pipes with cone filters attached tend to not do alot though, and rob the car of some low end. This has been discussed before in great detail (mostly on nasioc, but still here as well)
