not sure what a drive pulley is, but if it is the crank pulley, then it is fairly simple, you need two people.

i assume you already have all of the parts out of the way(the covering on top of all the pulleys, and have taken off all the belts.)
now, put the car in 5th and put a socket and breaker bar on the bolt in the middle of the pulley, a pipe on the bar works well too. have your friend push from the back as you turn the breaker bar counterclockwise(to remove). him pushing will make the pulley turn clockwise, and as it turns just throw your weight into it, it will break loose

ok here is a possible better fix......

I stoped off at my local garage for the real deal......

its a 2 person job

get a vise grip chain grip, and a busted belt for the pulley.....wrap the busted belt on pulley.....then clamp the vice grip arround the pulley ( so U dont mess the gruves on pulley ) ......this will keep the pulley and car from moving ..... next just take off pulley with socket and breaker bar, while the other holdes the vise grip .....best if U jack up the car so Ur buddy can go low with the vise grip while U work the breaker bar

Ok ..... I just did what I said earlyer in this poast......by myself as well it went easy. Just a breaker-bar and a pipe on the screw end of the vise grip ( lay the pipe on a safe spot in the engine compartment somewhere, and Ur set by urself )

good luck too all

i've got a stupid question...

can you not bust this bolt loose w/an impact? i have a pulley to swap out when i get the time, but as with all my mods, i will be doing it by myself....anyone tried using an impact to break the nut loose....or is that a bad idea?

You will probably have to pull the radiator and condenser to get the impact gun on there. Other than that I think it should work.

Hey Guys, im trying to install a perrin lightened crank pulley on my 02 WRX. Ive got the cover belts, belts and the crank bolt (gold bolt that is the in the middle of the pulley) off. Now i think im in the position to pull the pulley off but i cannot budge it. Ive got the woodruff key exposed, and it looks as if it should come off but..... Any suggustions? ive read the post above but connot make sense of what some of the instructions are talking about. The Perrin instructions say to use a comerical crank puller but ungfortunatley i do not own one... Please someone help, my wrxy is immobile...i need to drive!!

Go find an autoparts store that has free tool rental and get a puller. Basically, you buy it, then get a refund when you are done. Kragens, AutoZone, Chief, all the usual suspects do that to some degree.

Hey Ban Suvs,

I found a place that rents tools, my local VIP, but i do not know what tool to use to pull the pulley off. I first rented a harmonic balencer puller but when i got to my car i found that it didnt have threads for me to screw the cast iron piece to. I went back and asked the VIP people what tool to use and they said that it should just come off when the retainer bolt comes off (apparently one of the VIP people was a mechanic at subaru). Any ideas on what to do? try a 3 bar puller or such? Your input would be helpful as would others.....Thanks

Yeah, try the claw-type puller, which has the threaded shaft that you center on the crank shaft itself, and the hooks or claws that you set behind the edge of the pulley. If that still won't work, try soaking it in Coca-Cloa (seriously) by spraying it on the center, then tap it with a hammer, both arounf the outside facing it head-on, and from the outside to the inside. Not too hard of course. It SHOULD be coming off without a puller, but if it's stubborn that should work too.
