Exhaust? Will sedan fit on wagon?
all 02+ impreza share the same chasis. as long as both cars are NA the exhasut should be exactly the same. if the wagon is turbo you may run into issues w/ the downpipe. but subarus are like legos you can mix and match.
same with 93-01 imprezas. as for how 93-01 exhast mates w/ 02+ exhasut i have no idea except that the headers are the same shape (NA)

I think the RS cars, be it 98-01 or later, all have the same shape to the exhaust.
The axleback portion of the exhaust on ANY Impreza has the same overall shape. Meaning, the pattern the pipe follows. On the RS cars though (I think including the 2002+ ones, but I'm not sure--98-01 for sure, though), the rear-most hangar arm on the *axleback* portion points to the left, whereas on the WRX it points to the right.
Also, the flanges are at slightly different angles, something like 45 degrees or so.
So, you can put a WRX axleback onto an RS by rotating the flange, and getting an adapter to mate it up to a stock or stock-designed (but larger in diameter) midpipe. You need the adapter because the flanges themselves are of a different shape, so the bolts don't quite line up. Also, just hack that one hangar arm off, and mount a new/generic one on that points to the left, so it'll meet up with the hangar itself.
Otherwise... the WRX axleback is 2.25" in diameter, where the RS axleback is 1.875" in diameter. 2.25" is ideal for non-turbo cars, so it's a cheap/free (depending on the seller -- mine was free!!) axleback, which gets you most of the way towards a cheap exhaust upgrade. Add a custom midpipe, or a Stromung or TWE unit or something, and presto, there ya go. I have a Stromung that I found for half price on eBay.
Now... if you're going turbo on your RS/TS/OBS or whatever? Forget it. Stick to an aftermarket or custom system that's 2.5-3.0" in diameter. Most of the "experts" say that 2.5" is perfect for applications up to about 300hp, but over that, stick to 3.0." That I'm sure can be played with a bit.
Funny that the WRX came with 2.25" .... when it should definitely be 2.5."

Thanks everyone! I needed to do some research for a new product that I am trying to get into development. I already knew that the WRX sedan and the wagon had the interchangable exhaust, but no clue on the RS. You guys were a big help!!!! Hope this information gets a new quality product out for the RS version of the Impreza. Keep you posted with more details when the product is released...
