Engine/Power - non turbo (All non turbo Imprezas) Who needs a turbo when you have 2500cc? Cams, intakes, exhausts, etc. The 2.2L and 1.8L Subies are cool too.

Question Exhaust Shopping

Hey everyone, I'm looking to buy a Stromung axle-back or cat. I'm thinking of buying the dual tip stainless steel version for my 2002 automatic 2.5RS. Can anyone confirm if that is a good buy or not and make any suggestions regarding where I might buy it from? Know how much power I might actually expect from a a Stromung axle or cat? Thanks!

Thumbs up

You can't go wrong with Stromung, as long as you get stainless steel. Check out www.teaguesauto.com for axle-backs, cats and cat-backs. You might not see a lot in the way of hp, but it will sound awesome.

Its harder to say the actuall benefits of a cat back system. If anything i would expect to see more mid range potential occur than any noticable hp gains, assuming you've tuned your car with ecu management.

There are links to exhaust clips and i believe a few on here as well to what you can expect to hear when its all installed.

Personally i like the borla hush design with twin tips. Not extremely load but gives the car a nice burble and roar overall nice and suprisingly cheap for what it is. 3" cat back.

Arrow go brullen

i just ordered my 2.25 dual tip cat-back. From what i hear brullen makes a better quality exhaust. Talked to a guy yesterday who has a stromung, hes got a hole in the exhaust after three years. Brullen is stainless and coated with high temp black paint. Worth the cash.

Hey 96Imprezadent, did the guy you talked to buy a stainless steel Stromung? Or was it the mild steel they used to sell? Thanks!

It is a good buy, and there a lots of places that will sell them to you. Google search "Subaru stromung" and you'll have dozens of choices to purchase from.

Not very much. the general consensus is that doing a complete headerback system and a Cobb intake will get you close to 195 hp at the crank. Leaving out any one part of the system takes away more power than that individual part gives you, if that makes sense. What I mean is, no one part will make a significant difference in power. Think maybe 3-5 peak hp from a catback, any catback.

BAN SUVS, forgive my ignorance and slowness to understand...could you explain what you mean when you say that any one part TAKES AWAY more power than the individual part? Are you saying that I would get more power installing a Cobb Intake by itself than I would if I installed it with other parts (I didn't really think that was what you were saying) or that basically all the parts together are really what I need to make any noticable differences, otherwise, I can expect around 3-5 hp for every part individually? What about something like the Cobb stage 1, how much power does that actually make overall? The guys at Cobb told me around 20-25 horses (at the crank of course). Is that true? Thanks alot!!

Of all the different mods I've had, I think the intake was the single best one. But honestly, if you keep stock headers and/or stock cat, and most importantly cams, the difference in the car isn't super huge. It will be faster, but it won't be the equivalent of putting you into a new tax bracket so to speak.

Oh, wait, the question. I would guess that the intake and catback, by themselves, would give you maybe 180-185 horsepower. Adding headers and a cat might get you to 195. But if you are serious about doing NA mods, get cams. Stage I cams with stock headers, the intake, and a catback would put you at or above 200 hp probably.

Thanks for the info...are cams something that makes me lose gas mileage and/or place strain on my engine?? Any negative drawbacks like that? Or are their other positives besides power? I'm a daily driver. Thanks!

Gas mileage is related directly to how much throttle you use. I haven't swapped cams yet, but my day-to-day mileage with my mods is pretty consistent with what it was when I was stock. And no, cams and bolt-ons don't put additional strain on your motor. Not more than the extra hard driving you do will cause anyway.

Thanks a lot for the info! I'll look into Cobb cams along with the exhaust and intake!
