I'm gonna take a guess that in the 93's though 96 came in a duel port and 97 is when the body and everything changed and the hp on the EJ22 and since everyone who has the single port so far has a 97+ thats what would of happen but why did they do it is it for hp?

dual vs single port heads

Two ports are better than one. The two port heads flow better air in and gases out. All together, the two port heads breathe better. Which is better, having one nose hole or two? It sure is easier to breathe with two.

wile ImprezaVA has a good point I do wanna say a few things the 97 or 98+ impreza's EJ22 single port has more hp than the duel port 97 or 98 and down now I don't know where u get that extra 5hp or so but u'd think as a car gets newier you'd think it'd improve. Also as far as headers go a 4 and 1 header is better than a 4-2-1 header.

well one thing I do know is some restriction will creat more torque like if u have a huge exhast you'll have more hp at the top and if u put a sliencer on it you'll have more bottem end power and a single port might be more restive in some sense to create more torque or I might just be talking out of my *** but hey who knows

more HP

I don't know where u get that extra 5hp or so but u'd think as a car gets newier you'd think it'd improve.
Beginning with the 1997 model year,
the 2.2 and 2.5 engines were made more
fuel efficient, more powerful, and were
given a flatter, more usable torque curve
than in previous years. To achieve these
objectives, it was necessary to make
improvements and modifications to the
Subaru engine lineup. The following are
some of those improvements:
• Mechanical valve lash adjusters
(reduces friction),
• Lightweight pistons (reduces inertia),
• Short skirt, Molybdenum coated pistons
(reduces friction),
• Increased compression ratio (improved
power output),
• Improved cylinder head design
(improved cooling),
• Improved induction system
(improved breathing).

Also, I'm not dead sure on this, but didn't they stop making the dual port heads in '95? I read this somewhere.

EDIT: p_vesper & scobaru: I'll be able to tell you if a cat-back + intake will make difference as soon as I get my Magnaflow muffler. I've already ripped out the snorkel and will be adding a K&N panel filter (3320312) from advance auto.
