I went ahead and wrapped my new Borla header. I also welded in another O2 sensor bung (for gauge) as well as the EGT bung. I wrapped it with 50% overlap and saturated it with three cans of the special high temp paint/sealer (black). I have had it on for over a week now and it is OK so far. I have heard stories of Borlas having very poor weld quaility and this may make it worse. I sure love having the EGT and air/fuel ratio gauge! Time will tell if it holds up very well...

Well mine cracked after one month. Rather then sending the entire thing back to Borla I got them to agree to let a local shop fix the header and I am to fax them the estimate/receipt and they will reimburse me for the work.


Mine cracked where #2 and #4 collect into one pipe. I think the cracking might be heat related with the way that it heats up and cools down so much faster then the old stock piping. Maybe the wrap would help it to cool at a slower rate.

 

I hope you are right about that! I also think maybe that since there is a HUGE difference in temperature between the inside of the header (1200-1400 degrees) and the outside of the header (ambient) that maybe the difference causes stress on the welds? Of course no other headers seem to have that problem. I really don't know but I will keep everyone updated as to how it holds up...

 

By the way that looks like a VDO EGT sensor. Is it? If so replace it cause they are way too slow.

 

No, it is AutoMeter Phantom series and it not slow at all. I was really surprised how fast the air/fuel gauge works too.

where did you get it? how much? so its a universal 02 sensor? thats what i wanted to do. have a more reliable source for the a/f gauge..

what generation borla headers are the ones that you got? and where did you pick up the heat wrapping? why woudl wrappign them hurt the headers? thanks......

 

I got the stainless O2 sensor bung from a friend. You can buy them on-line at http://www.lmperformance.com/2475/50.html The O2 sensor is just a Bosch universal one wire from Pep Boys. These headers are the gen4. The header wrap can be purchased from Summit or Jegs. The reason people say it will harm the header is because the stainless steel will get much hotter being wrapped and that can make stainless turn brittle...
