97 Impreza, Stock Intake Howl????
The wife's 97 Impreza L (2.2L) is making a howling/somewhat of a whistling noise. It's a tone coming from the intake (which is stock) & gets louder then you open up the filter housing....definately coming from the intake. Only makes the tone at idle, disappears when you rev the engine.
Any ideas what this could be?
Haven't had much time to look at it yet.....I think maybe the Mass Airflow module on the intake tube, but not sure why it would do this.

OK, that's cool. We've had the car for about 3-4 years...just never really noticed (since I don't drive it often). Just recently noticed it....unless something is actually wrong & it's just louder. I don;t remember hearing it this loud before.

I removed my intake silencer from my '98 2.2L L, but didn't pay much else attention to it. Maybe the silencer came loose where it connects to the air box. I'm not sure if this happens too often, but anything is possible. Did you switch to a higher flowing air filter? Or even change your air filter? Maybe the old one was too dirty and that's why you weren't hearing any intake sound.

Is it a whistling kinda sound, like from avacuum leak, or more of a screechy mechanical kinda sound? If you think it's air, probably some piece cam misaligned from another and now you have a reverse whistle tip! Woo Wooooooo!

no, it's not Bubb Rubb's patented whistle tip! That's f'n hilarious. Filters not dirty, but is a standard Purolator (not high flow).
When I get a change, I'm gonna check it out by taking off the intake & chacking it out. Probably time to clean out the throttle body too (if it's gunked up at all).
