cool down

I've had my sti for about three months now and I've got a question. I've never had a turbo car before and I was wondering after hard driving what you guys do in regards to cool down?

Thanks and go giants

Some folks idle the car for a few minutes. Others install turbo timers from outfits like Blitz. Still others don't do either of these because they don't feel it's necessary to do a cool down period to extend the life of the turbo.

If you get a turbo timer, try to make sure it can work in conjunction with whatever security system you have in the car. I will also mention that at a track day this year in CA, a car was involved in an off-track excursion, resulting in a fire that resisted being put out because the turbo timer kept supplying power to the fuel pump (sorry, I can't seem to find the thread). The simple solution is to turn the timer off during track events.

Good info. Mind if I post that in the link above as an update?

Subaru says in it's manual that no cool down procedure is needed because of the cooling system that is installed on the car.

just let it cool down on the way home. drive slowly (& low rpms) for the last mile or two, then let it idle for an extra minute.

This issue has been beaten to death (no offense ftnssn for posting a valid question). Peaty's link contains info which shows the reason an idle procedure is unnecessary on a modern turbocharged Subaru. Having said that, I would never run my car hard and then just park it. There are other components to consider (brakes, drivetrain, etc.). The best thing you can do is take it easy for a bit before reaching your destination ("a cool down lap"). This will allow all of the vehicle's components a chance to return to their normal operating temperatures.

I have yet to see evidence that refutes what SOA/FHI has stated about their design.

No offense taken, just glad to get some opinions on it. I realized that it didn't say anything about cool down in the manual but that just didn't seem right to me. Thanks again everyone.

i heard that if you just let it run for about 5 to 10 secs is enough because the turbo is water cooled. i guess if you spend that much on it in this day and age , that would be a good technology to do some R and D on. but this is what i heard. if anyone knows if this is real facts or not let us know.

Yeah, but hey, if you ruin your stock turbo, that's just a good excuse to get a VF30/34!

You may want to re-read this thread. Peaty already supplied a link and I mentioned it again in my last response:
