porting heads and boring a block
Hey I was wondering if anyone has turned in their core block and or heads to have them bored and portted to a company such as Cosworth, Darton Int. etc. Cuz I am like most people and don't want to spend $3,500 for a set of new heads and $5,000 for a sleeved block.
How much did you spend?
Who did them?
What measurements?

well what do you want done to you heads and block? it all kinda depends on that. if you just want a valve job and your heads ported then it can be just over a grand maby like 1200. but when you get into oversized valves springs retaners and cams you are looking at alot more I was doing some pricing befor and I was looking at about 3300 for the heads to be worked with oversized valves ported and springs retaners and cams. and you have to hope that your heads are still in workable condision. after everything I ended up geting a set of reman V7 heads for about 1800 bucks. with all AVCS parts. I guess you realy just need to think of what you want from your car. sometimes going full out on block and heads is just more than it is worth for your personal goals.
I've had a number of blocks bored and balanced. You don't have to go with one of the national companies, but I would HIGHLY recommend making sure the place you do it at is professional. I had my Integra engine bored out .020" over, and the guy decided he knew better than me and the manufacturer about the piston to wall clearance. Instead of running .001" clearance as I TOLD him, he bored it out to .006" because "that's what the V-8's run". So... I blew oil and made crappy power, and the engine grenaded within 10k miles.
I went to another shop that had an excellent reputation with the drag and circle track racers in Central California, and they balanced my crankshaft and all the pistons to within something like .1 gram and align-honed the crank to .001" ... AND rebuilt several heads (Honda and Big Block Chevy) for me.
Finding a great engine building shop is far more important than finding a cheap one. I also think it's just as good as going with one of the national companies if the shop that you choose is run by honest people who know what they're doing.
I spent 600 bucks having my Honda block overbored, align-honed with the crank, and balanced with the pistons and rods. I spent 600 bucks for both of my Big Block Chevy heads, which required a full rebuild and porting. I spent 80 bucks getting my Honda crank balanced and my piston/rods NDI (Non-destructive Inspection... ie. Magna Flux or Dye Penetrant) and balanced.
If you find a good engine shop and know all of the specs to set the engine up to, you can get it done for MUCH cheaper than buying a pre-fabricated short block.

and thats exactly what i want...im hoping to get the perrin gt3582r kit soon and would like a head that would allow me to rev higher so i could hold boost longer. porting yes...im pretty ignorant but would love to learn more about specs to internals of the heads....same with the block. i would love to be able to one day hit 10's, but for the near future im just uping the stock turbo...i have the supporting mods. i wanted a future reference for internals and pricing so i have an idea of what it'll take to build an engine instead of buying an engine.
