Stick with the stock air intake box, it is good for up to ~400 hp, and just get a good drop in filter. I actually gained 10 whp/10 wtq when I re-tuned my WRX after switching from the SPT sri that came on my WRX as dealer installed option. There is plenty of documentation here and NASIOC regarding this issue, but the summary is that any aftermarket intake will allow for greater heat soak and inconsistent MAF readings. Consequently, these do not present optimal tuning conditions and hamper the tuner from extracting the most out of your set up. You only need a intake with a FMIC or a high horsepower set up. However, considering that I still gained power with a stock airbox on a built 20G turbo that was already putting down over 300 whp, it says a lot (at least to me) about the stock part's efficiency.

I'm really surprised on how many people suggest the stock box overall out performing any aftermarket intake boxes. I just purchased off craigslist an SPT air box. I'm gonna install it today. i'm excited but wonder if LxJLthr is right about sticking with the stock would be better when I eventually protune my car and all its upgraded parts.

If you still go with the SPT, make sure to at least get the SPT heat shield as well and wrap the body of the intake with some sort of heat shielding material to lessen heat soak as much as possible since its body is cast iron. IMHO the intake does make the stock BOV, turbo spool and engine noise a lot better sounding.

Just cleaned the used SPT intake gonna let it dry for awhile...It came with a heat shield for a great deal. Major mods I currently have now are Helix catted DP, Greddy Evo2 catback exhaust, and the WORX bov. I need to adjust the bov because it's giving me bad idling and after that I will install the SPT airbox. So happy took today off from work!
