Tried these...Have these...
Stock STI Recirculating valve...with the snorkelectomy...you can hear a distinct "whoosh".
APS Dual Vent (50/50) bov...this is one nice piece of work...it recirculates until you hit high boost, then lets part of the air out...no problems at all with idling or backfiring...took me about 1/2 hour the first time...that dang recirculation fitting was a pain...When you are boosting...it sounds very nice...a lower toned pitcheeeee!
HKS SSQV (100% atmospheric)...again, no problems. I am not sure why so many on the board here complain of idling and rough shifting...I guess I am lucky...I had this bov laying around...but no WRX Flange for it...lucky for me, my cousin had one...took me a while to acquire one though...took all of 5 minues to install this...because I am using the stock silver insert...I get the many times mentioned "Eagle on Crack" squeal...It's a pretty high pitched squeak sound... Pretty cool...it gets louder the higher the boost...
When blowing off at high boost, runs rich for a split second, and once in a while it backfires...I am sure if someone was following me, they would see a fireball with my APS 3.5" race tbe...
I have all three at my disposal...I change them whenever my mood changes...I use to do the same with exhausts until I bought the APS...now, because of the proprietary 3.5" downpipe, I can't be swapping out anymore...but then again, I don't need to....heh heh
I use to swap (using a PDE downpipe) Marko has this now...
Stock-when I needed quiet (Still have this...and keeping it)
B&B-stock looking twin tip, yet a very deep growl...(Myroncuz has it now)
HKS Carbon TI-when I wanted the bling...(JuniorSTI has it now)
TurboXS RFL-Ti when I wanted the bling and the loud sound(Rally_WRX has it now)...
I like change...but it's expensive...I'm slowing down now...

recommendations?
so what would you recommend? is there a difference between the name brand bov's and the knock offs? im assuming that each bov makes its own distinct sound? i dont care too much about performance as long as it doesnt hurt performance, and dam these things are pricey. haha, thanks for the reply

Recommend...
you go to one of your local I-Club meets...we have this once a week here in Hawaii...there we check out equipment, hear sounds...talk story and have a good time.
Personally, I like the APS Dual Vent for performance and sound...but I am having fun with my HKS SSQV....I would recommend either one without hesitation...
since the performance issue is not a concern...go with the bov that sounds good to you...
The "Whoosh" bov's are...APS, GFB, Blitz, Forge...
The "Pitchee" bov's are like the Turbo XS RFL, type H...very loud
The loud "Queak" like the fast and the furious goes to the HKS SSQV...
Others like the SARD R2D2, Perrin,
you really have to hear one to know which one it is you prefer...btw, make sure you hear it when you car is under load and boosting...may sound totally different than just revving it up...

Yeah I use the Blitz DD BOV pretty good for sound nice whoosh sound. Sure my car runs slighty rich but nothing bad. I don't really care what people say about BOV's but its your call. We wouldn't really need them until we swap in a bigger turbo and run a high boost. I can really tell that my STi spools slightly faster and I can hear it after shifts also.
yah, i like the sound of bovs, even if its a little ricey. they are pretty expensive though, for somethign that just gives you sound and doesnt help your engine performance (on a stock sti that is) :P i was looking up some and they are like 2-300 bucks, hot dam
any comments about generic bovs? like the ones on ebay for 60-70 bucks...hehe
oh, and so the install is pretty straight forward? nothing too crazy?

I got mine for about 180 because of a close out sale in a store. Usually you can get a used one online for cheap also you just have to look around for people that dont want them anymore.
