Best engine management?

I have an 04 STI. Whats the best engine managment to get keeping in mind that I will continue to modify the car and the ECU will need to be retuned. I also cant spend a huge amount of money. It needs to be under $1000 and stay under that limit which I think that most of them are. I know that Cobb is cheaper than Vishnu and there is no down time but I have heard that Vishnu is a better program. What do you think? Any experiences?

I believe the Cobb AccessPort will be cheaper as there are no additional costs as you upgrade as long as you stick to upgrades that Cobb has written maps for.

I love my AccessPort. Even stage 1 is a vast improvement.

I can't say if its better or worse than Vishnu.

I dont plan on buying "packages". Is there any way to get a good tune when I have a HKS cat back and a K&N short ram or will any cat back/intake map work?

Check out Cobb's STI AP Page:

http://cobbtuning.com/sti/accessport/index.html

Looks like all maps are for stock intake.

Basically turboback exhaust is the only mod they support for now.

Once ProTUNER is released, they will be tuners around the country who will be able to tune a custom map for your AP.

The Hydra is deffinately a nice system, but I would advise against the UTEC as there are now better options available. The UTEC has a lot of quirks about it that are difficult and time consuming to tune around. It also lacks the adaptability of propper EM solutions.

Thanks

So, for those of you who have an intake, what do you do about engine management? I would like to keep my intake mostly for the sound and look under the hood. Whats the deal with not having programs for an intake?

Most engine management programs come with base maps that will work for most people. Each intake is different in its own way so its hard to make a generic map that will work with all. So thats why the base maps are meant to be used with the stock airbox. So if you want to use that intake w/ lets say a UTEC, you are going to have to take it to someone and have them tune it to make a custom map.

There's actually a secret area on this forum that would be a good place for you to do some research.

Secret I-club EM vault

Actually, I have seen this thing in works...

Read up on it... This is completely new, never done before concept, from what I understand, and now it is a reality. Shiv already has one EVO running this and it is as much of an imporovement over your typical custom tune, as a computer was over a calculator. The post is pretty long, but read it all. Lots of great info.
