acceleration from 40/60/80mph?

Hello, I am sorry to beat a dead horse, but i just wanted to know if there were any videos/evidence/opinions on the US Sti's power/acceration from a roll.

I know the magazine numbers and the very impressive 1/4mile times, but how is the STI from a rolling start/freeway roll? I searched for "roll" and "rolling start" etc etc, but I did not find anything.

I am coming from an e36 m3 which definitely has great gearing/power/powerband on the freeway----I know that the STI has a lot to offer, but i would like this freeway power.

Thanks again,
comptechgsr

The WRX and STI generate their peak power at 5500 RPM and make very little power (comparatively) until at least 3600 RPM. This is the limitation of having a small-displacement turbocharged engine running so much boost (15+psi). A larger-displacement engine with less boost will be less peaky and smoother overall, and deliver more power at low RPMs.

The upshot of this is, the WRX and STI don't generate much power on the freeway unless you are either downshifting to third gear or driving at an extremely illegal speed. In a WRX, 4400-5500 RPM in 4th gear is in excess of 80 MPH; in 5th gear at peak power you are approaching 100MPH.

The STI is quite "torquey" and you will have no trouble passing other cars by dropping into 5rth gear -- but you will get left behind by anything with larger displacement and a decent driver behind the wheel. Certainly the M3 you mention would leave an STI behind from a roll without the STI making an emergency drop into 4rd gear (3rd for the WRX, and you'd still lose.)
