Engine/Power - EJ20T (pre-2006 WRX and JDM) There is replacement for displacement, it is forced induction - OEM 2.0 liter turbo engines in the USDM WRX. 90-94 Legacy Turbo EJ22 turbo engines can also be discussed here.

There are mods documented on here about removing the intake silencer. That is one way to hear the turbo spool, BOV, etc... Or, a short ram intake works too, but the jury seems to be out on that topic.

you seriously can't hear the turbo? in any gear? I drive with some music on and I can hear mine. Are you blasting tunes while you drove? You can hear the turbo with a stock wrx.

if you want sound, a bigger turbo would be suggested. the stocker is much smaller compared to the 16G on the Evolution. however, with a downpipe, and up-pipe you can hear the WRX turbo spool quite noticeably.

Like stated above, I removed my intake silencer and I can hear the turbo and BOV much better. It makes driving my REX that much more fun. I'll be interested to hear it once I get my Blitz short ram intake, if it ever gets here.

the wrx turbo is "silent" from a factory aluminum piece that is meant to keep the turbo silenced. Good Luck

Its a TD04 not a T88 And since its more prone to a whooosh sound than a whine (like the K03) its not as loud/perceptable. If you're used to a 1.8T's stock K03 you're probably listening for the wrong sound. Take out the resonator like everyone's saying and/or put in a short ram.

Don't bother removing the silencer...

In my opinion it's a waste of time. I took mine out expecting
to hear what everyone is talking about. Can't even tell
a difference.

If it doesn't even give a performance gain, then it really
is a worthless "mod".

I would venture to guess Subaru engineers know a good
deal more about the intake than we do. It's got to be there
for a reason.

I know I'll catch a lot of crap for this one.

God forbid you pay more attention to the road in front of you rather than listening for a sound Subie's engineers went to great lengths to remove.

I found my filter got much dirtier faster with the silencer removed than with it in. The inside wheel well gets very dirty from what I have seen....not the greatest place to suck air from.
