Wastegates control your boost pressure.

You've got one side of the turbo which takes air in from the atmosphere and pushes it into the engine. This happens because that side of the turbo is pushed by the other side of the turbo, whose fins are pushed by the exhaust gas pressure coming from your engine.

The wastegate is a control valve not for the boosting side of the turbo but for the side that gets spun by engine exhaust. The wastegate has a line which is connected to your engines boost lines. When the wastegate senses that pressure it leaks exhaust gases away around the turbo and to the downpipe, away from the turbo fins. This slows the turbo down, which reduces boost. Its a closed system. If you didn't have a wastegate, boost would keep building and your engine would explode into a melting heap of piston goo.

Most of the turbos usually gotten for EJ2x engines come with wastegates that should be able to handle the limits that the turbo can put out... that is they do not open because of too much exhaust pressure, even if they're not sensing enough boost to open normally. Although some have been known to leak when you take off some of the downpipe backpressure by installing a better-flowing downpipe. Though, there are other ways of defeating this problem which are cheaper and easier than upgrading. I ground the the seat for the wastegate on my turbo in such a way that its now able to close more deeply thus making its spring more effective. I.e. it takes more exhaust pressure to open it up than it did before. I'm sure you can find threads on how to do this.
