Engine/Power - EJ20T (pre-2006 WRX and JDM) There is replacement for displacement, it is forced induction - OEM 2.0 liter turbo engines in the USDM WRX. 90-94 Legacy Turbo EJ22 turbo engines can also be discussed here.

What modifications are needed for an ihi vf30?

you have heard correctly. you could get away without the downpipe, but it's very worthwhile having it in. You might want to put the intake and blow off valve back to stock. if you do that, tuning it will be a breeze.

If you're going to go to all the trouble of buying and installing a bigger turbo you should at least do the upgrades you mention in order to maximize the gains from it. I'd also strongly recommend a new set of tires if you're still on the RE92s. They can't handle 227hp, let alone 300+. Sell the intake, BOV, and MBC.

don't sell the BOV, with higher hp you might want that bov. but the MBC and intake should be sold for an ECU upgrade along w/ injectors, pump, rails, up, dp,

The IHI VF30 is the standard turbo on the JDM STi v7, which uses the same BOV as your stock WRX. You will not need an upgraded BOV for any IHI turbocharger.

But since he already has the BOV, what is the harm in keeping it?

Maybe no harm, except the normal running rich and stumbling depending on what type of BOV it is. Plus, with all the money he'll be spending on downpipe, uppipe, injectors, and ECU he could probably use the extra cash. I'm not saying that you can't run the turbo with the BOV and intake. I'm just saying that they might cause more harm than good.

I think intakes usually cause much more of a hassle than BOVs, unless its 100% atmospheric. And if he's getting it tuned, would running rich even be a problem?

Wrxplaya, what kind of BOV is it?

Its 100% atmospheric, you may want to ge ta 50/50 BOV instead.
