Exclamation what do you think?

Ok. I have a chance to get a FP20g for a really good price. I talked to Dustin @ vishnu today, and went over some of my options. 1 get the stage 2 kit from them, no real clear power output, but Im guessing with the stage 2 and frontmount and fuel rails that about 300whp is gonna be it. Please correct me if Im wrong it will really help. 2) get the 20G and be able to make well over this with supporting mods. I know the tranny wont hold up, but I can de tune for now and have the option later. The only problem with this is the fact of I live in TN and there arent any tuners close. Dustin said that they will be in GA in March, I could have it tuned there, but here again I have to wait and spend more money for the tune. I just want to know what you guys think about this. I need to figure something out. I said that I was going to wait, but having my @ss handed to me on a daily basis just isnt going to cut it. I have made it through several cars w/out warranty and I think I may just have to do it again. Please any feedback is welcome!

oh yeah

I guess it would help to know what I want to do with the car huh? I want it to be as much of a daily driver as possible. I also want to get back into somewhat of a man this thing is fast state of mind. I dont want real bad lag, some is ok just not full boost @ 6k. I love the curves so this is not an option. Also I will be running nothing but 93 oct. Im on the fence and just dont know which way to go. I love the cars stock driveability and dont want to completley loose that. I hope this helps in any feedback. If there is any more info that you need just let me know. Also if there any more options that you can think of that may fit my needs please share I know that I am kinda jumping from one end of the spectrum to the other here and I realize that these setups are extremley different. I just would like some feedback on what you guys think would benefit me the most.

My 05 wrx has about 300 with the factory intercooler and turbo... FMIC sounds extreme for 300.

huh?

Your making 300awhp with the factory turbo? Not sure that I follow. I know that the FMIC may sound like a waste of money but IMO it is a good piece of insurance. Also I got the whole kit with bov and aem shorty for 185 shipped. Minus one pipe that had a kink.

The stock WRX turbo is only good to about 275 horsepower. That's all the air it will flow.

05aspenrex, a 20g will be a *bit* laggy for most, but there are worse turbos. Depedning on the hto and cold sisde trims, you could reach 300 whp on 93. If you go with that turbo though, you'll definitely need custom tuning. There are very few off-the-shelf maps for non-bolton turbos around. On the other hand, a VF22 will get you close to 300whp, and spool before 4k rpm. You can also use a mail-order reflash with it from most tuners, including Vishnu, although they prefer the VF34 for street use- it spools sooner than the VF22 with only about 20 fewer peak horsepower.

Part of the problem is that the stock 5MT tranny has fairly widely spaced gear ratios. That's one of the reasons why the most common 'stage' package utilizes the VF30 or VF34, for a broader power band. When you start tuning bigger turbos, sure you can get the big HP numbers on the dyno but the power band becomes narrower and 'peakier' and the car may actually accelerate less quickly through the gears than a smaller turbo properly tuned. The VF30/34 is a fairly conservative turbo choice so you still have time to do some research before you buy.

If you can afford the money and the wait, you would do well to schedule a custom tune by Vishnu Performance at that GA date. Get all the parts you need installed ahead of time and ask Vishnu Performance how you can drive it to that dyno facility. Sometimes certain combinations just aren't very driveable using the factory ECU.

thoughts

First of all, thanks for the replies. I understand that the 20g will be more of a laggish turbo, I also know that it will be more potent in the higher rpm range, which does cut down my powerband. The vf30/34 seems to be a very good turbo, and you can get some nice power from them I just dont like the feeling of being limited. I just do not know what to do. I have little time to decide though if I want to get Shiv to do a custom tune. I just wish that there were a few more cars around with similar setups or atleast on of the two. So that I could drive one and that would help in my dilema. On one hand the IHI is easily tuned and very streetable , on the other the FP is more potent but harder to tune. Ahhhh.
