Uppipe install help

How hard is it to install an uppipe? Local shops want to charge me like $300-$350 labor to do the install. I just dont see paying that much for it. What they say is that the install seems like a piece of cake, but except for one bolt that takes over an hour to get out. You have to twist the uppipe different ways so as to get the bolt out. My question is, how true is this? Is this bolt the reason people pay for the install? The turbo xs directions seem striaght forward but.......... i'm not sure.

It takes us about 1.5 hours to do with manual tools and about 1hour with power tools.
There are some difficult bolts to remove. It is all about what order you do the job. Hopefully the directions you have are adequate and you have all the tools.
We typically charge between 120-150 for an install.

1 to 1.5 hours is definitely for a professional with all of the right tools, a lift, and a bunch of previous pipe installs. I personally just did this mod last Saturday, and spent a total of 6 hours for the complete install. I am very good with tools, but the first time you do anything, it always takes a while. The pipe will slide right out if you loosen the pasenger's side motor mount, and very CAREFULLY, jack the motor up about two inches using a block of wood on the oil pan. This mod is sooooo worth it though. Very good turbo spool up and there are good hp gains.

Here is the link for the directions I was going to follow. Are these good? Also, is the helix flex uppipe a good choice?

Scoobymods.com
I used the instructions for a Perrin up-pipe install that I found at scoobymods.com. There are many more pictures here than the Turbo XS ones. I think it is always easier with a good visual especially when it comes to putting something back together.

i also used scoobymods.com. the first time i did the install it took me a good 7 hours. my advice to you is to make sure that you lube those nuts and bolts that connect the up and the down pipe to the turbo. this will prevent you from working as hard as you would w/out lubing. one time i did 4 uppipes in one day.

Certainly removing the heat shield is the most waste of time there is. Other than that removing the EGT and siezed bolts can be frustrating.

shiv's instructions are so simple to go by, you could train monkeys to do uppipe installs!
i also agree, the 1-1.5 install is just not feasible for a DIY'er. unless of course you have installed a few already, have a lift, all the tools on hand and maybe even an extra set of hands to pass you tools and whatnot
first time i did mine, it took me ~five hours by myself. alot of getting up on top of the car, then underneath, etc. an extra set of hands and two shop lights would help out a ton....oh, and get some ratchet wrenches and an offset o2 sensor socket (short)
good luck
