Turbo going bad?
#16
Okay good, I'm ruling out misfires and other major problems. So it has to be exhaust leak. Might as well just upgrade bro, but just do the test when you can first and let me know what happens. Where you see the smoke accordingly and all that. But besides that upgrade and the problem should go away. And a tune up shouldn't hurt either, if you haven't done so already.
Since your almost at 100k
I would recommend the following:
Spark plugs
Timing belt, tensioner belt/Water Pump
Differential Fluid/Transmission Fluid
Coolant
Fuel Filter (Depending on what year your car is)
And inspect your brakes.

Do you have a boost gauge and if so is boost fluctuating? It sounds like the oil seal in the turbo is going out and that is a VERY common problem.

I know you're just trying to help but I think you're waaaay off in your analysis and you might make this guy spend money on parts that won't fix the problem. What exhaust gasket around the turbo would cause oil to leak? I don't see how an exhaust gasket could make the car smoke only coolant or oil can do that.

Yeah I understand what your saying, that's why I told him to have it checked out. He didn't say it was leaking oil or anything but just twice he had a small cloud of smoke. And on top of that just the smell of a leaking exhaust smell, so first came to mind was a busted gasket or some nature to that. Well in any case I hope he gets it fixed. Good Luck and thanks for clearing up some gaps that I didn't address. But yeah I totally agree with you that it probably is the oil seal around the turbo, it had to be some kind of seal that would be causing a leak.

I'm not trying to bust your ballz or anything but I believe it is important to only comment on things you have experience with and if you don't explain that you have no experience. If you just go off what you read you will be more likely to spread misinformation. When I first bought my WRX in 02 I was also guilty of making this mistake so don't think I'm trying to be a dik, I'm just trying to help the community.
