Tin Can Mod. Feedback Requested. Re: DIY After MAF Hose Mod.

Ok, so first off, I'm posting this up to try to get some good feedback before I consider this a good "mod."

Please feel free to let me know your opinions about this as it just came to me last night. If you feel the need to flame, at least explain why you think it sucks.

So, I just got a silicone turbo inlet pipe, and was looking to get a matching "after MAF hose" to go with it, but didn't want to spend $70+ for that little tube. It seems the problem with these stock pieces is mainly from turbulence in the hoses along the "flex" sections. So, I decided to smooth out my stock MAF hose with tin can. See pics below.

The end result should be that the interior of the MAF hose is now much smoother along the tiny ridges of the can, and the inside of the can seems to have a teflon type coating, that gives it added smoothness. I think it would be impossible to accidentally suck the can any farther into the intake system, as the can is very springy, and very tightly fitting in the pipe. My only real concern would maybe have to do with heat breaking down the teflon coating on the can, and sending microscopic bits of teflon through the turbo, but I don't think it should ever be hot enough in that part of the intake system for that to even occur. Besides, when they manufacture canned food, they "cook" or pasteurize the contents in the can at high heat, ~140Deg.F., which is much hotter than I ever want my intake to get.

So, if this is a good idea, let me know. And if it's completely retarded, let me know, but tell me why. All feedback is appreciated.

(P.S.)Sorry for the blurry pictures. My battery was dying and flash not working. I will take clearer pictures later if anyone wants to see more detail.

1. Clean thoroughly, and cut can as shown with tin snips.

2. Bend can into circular shape slightly larger than interior of hose, overlapping the edges of the can.

3. Slide the can into the flex section of the MAF tube, and align with flex sections. The can will stay put because of the springiness of the steel, and won't be able to go anywhere past the flex area.

i don't think you need to worry, like 03 impreza said, it's after the MAF. do you have the stock intake on? if you so, your good. and in my opinion, intake turbulence is an over-dramatized problem...

I think what he is getting at is, is it worth to spend $70-$100 for an silicone intake charge pipe when it is possible to make your own that will have the same effect. I think you definetly succeeded in smoothing out the bore of the stock air pipe but unless your making huge amounts of power smoothing out the bore on your air intake hose won't make a difference. You saved nearly $100 though

this mod wouldn't do anything to airflow.

K and N's are over rated.

Wow.

Now go back calculate the delta in volume with the smaller cross sectional area of the tube.

Sounds like a logical sense of judgement.
