Start-up, Warm-up & Go with your turbo...?
I used to be one of those guys who never put my WRX into gear until the water temp was in the normal operating zone (i.e. the needle got onto the printed part of the gauge). When I got an oil pressure meter, I started waiting until idle pressure got ATLEAST below 6kg/cm^2.
Now for an educated guess... EJ20s like most modern engines do exhaust return to heat up the engine and shorten fast idle at start up, right? If this is true then the crankcase is safe to drive as soon as you turn the key, like most modern cars. (In any car I atleast wait 15 seconds to let some oil get thrown around).
So, I guess, if I start my car and just drive mellow enough that I do not start creating boost until the oil pressure is in a decent zone and water temp is up in the normal operating zone, I'm doing OK and the turbo's life is preserved?
thanx,
jason

I drive out of my parking stall almost immediately after the car starts (maybe 10-15 seconds of idling), but I definitely don't BOOST it around until I see normal operating temp.
Interesting note: It's a lot easier to stay OUT of boost with my newly-installed VF30.

For me it all depends on ambient temps. In the winter I like to warm up the car for about 3 minutes before I drive. It was about 8 degrees here this moring. I think a 3 minute warm up is warranted.
In the dead of summer (ambient temps over 80) I will drive after idling for about 15 seconds.
I never exceed 3,000 RPM or more than about 1/3 throttle until the engine has reached it's normal operating tempature.
I don't have an oil temp gauge yet. Could someone who does tell me if the oil reaches it's normal temp by the time the water temp has reached it's normal operating temp (90 C)?

I tend to wait until the water temp gets into the middle section before I drive off. I feel that it is a more gentle way of warming the car up. That and the fact that I don't get the annoying clutch shudder when I wait for the coolant level to hit the center zone.

I've noticed after about 15-20 mins of driving the coolant temp gauge has this spot it hits that is just above the middle mark, it seems to sit at the middle mark for a while before bumping up to that spot just above the middle; I use that as my gauge to judge when the car is safe to romp on. I also let the car warm up for 5 mins or so first thing in the morning before leaving the house, don't typically wait that long any other time in the day after the first start up of the car, but I definitely look for the coolant gauge to hit that "sweet spot" before having any fun.
