Engine/Power - EJ20T (pre-2006 WRX and JDM) There is replacement for displacement, it is forced induction - OEM 2.0 liter turbo engines in the USDM WRX. 90-94 Legacy Turbo EJ22 turbo engines can also be discussed here.

So there's this guy...

So there's this guy...

who a long-distance friend of mine knows who told her tonight that he slapped a JDM STi EJ22 in his '96 Impreza L. What are the differences between the EJ22 and a turbo'ed EJ25 or USDM EJ20 so she can go look under the hood and then smack him around about it. (She doesn't really believe him yet. He also says his mommy is going to import him a RHD STi and get this... convert it to LHD, instead of waiting a few more months and saving 15k by getting the US version. Whacko.)

It would be tough to tell by just looking if it was real though. I would guess look for red intake manifold and STi logo on the oversized intercooler, but those are both mods lots of people have done to other motors so I don't really know what to look for to be sure or not. Maybe there is some difference in the appearance of the N/A vs Turbo heads?!
So the stamp would be in the same place as on an EJ25? If so, then good, b/c she has an '02 RS. What about the turbo? Any ID marks on the housing? I guess if it says 'Garrett' or IHI or something, then we got a ringer...

Also, the could have an USDM EJ22T block with different heads, or stock heads, or maybe stock or same as 22b turbo... I have no idea how to tell if it is true STi. Have they even made an STi with EJ22 since the 22b? I am out of the loop.
I am thinking that if it is indeed a JDM 22b, it will be the standard 35k retread like all the Honda guys get, since Subaru isn't exempt from that rule. Wonder how hard it would be to get an SVX long block...? heh heh

Uuuuuuhhhh... maybe. I dunno. But he did say STi, not 22B, although he may not know the difference. Either way, an imported EJ22 would kick ****, and spotting a guy with an alligator mouth and gecko *** would be even cooler, hahaha!

I thought so too, but I could have been wrong. I like the idea of an RS-t better anyway, so I never really looked into it.
