Newbie! Yay! Turbo timer question...
Forst off, I would like to get one. I let my car idle down for a minute or two whenever I stop but since I only have 305 miles on the clock so far, I haven't been driving hard...
So - what turbo timers have people been using? Where do you mount them? Which is best as far as ease of operation and stuff? I don't know much about them, but a friend has a Blitz smart turbo timer (FATT?) that takes measurements and figures out how long to idle. Any comments?
Thanks... Sure to have lots more 'stupid questions' in the future. The good news is that I love this car... Can't wait till I can rev past 4k.

they all do the same. its the looks and extra features such as boost gauge or a/f that distinguish them apart from one another.
there's absolutely no need for a turbo timer other than for kicks though. coolant remains flowing through the turbo until it cools down after you turn the car off anyways.

Wait...
Coolant keeps flowing through the turbo until it cools? How does that work? That's great! Just used to my 1984 300ZX Turbo that doesn't even HAVE water cooling on the turbo. If there is no need, I really don't want to spend the money or the time.
Thanks,
Jacob

Are you positive that there is no need for the Turbo Timer? I just had a 1990 Supra Turbo and I know that it needed one. You are sure that it cools without caking? Have I been wasting my time by letting the car idle for a minute or so? I already have a turbo timer ready for me to install. If I don't need it, I will definately go for a refund.
think of a turbo timer as cheap extra insurance. Do you drive the car hard? Do you have any modifications? Then why not have one?
yes, the turbo is somewhat 'cooled' after the car is shut off, ... But, IMO, not even close to enough for the way I drive. Plus, the 'cooling' design is for a stock car, not one that has modifications.

well, if you're not hurting for $$, ... you might as well keep it b/c if you ever plan on modding the car, it wouldn't be bad to have.
plus, it may give you, or your Dad, something else to play with.

coolant in the turbo flashes to vapor when heated. the vapor will go to the coolant reservior tank since its the high point in the cooling system. coolant from the passenger side of the cylinder head will then enter the turbo. this will continuously happen until the turbo is no longer hot enough to cause the coolant to vaporize.

i dont have one yet, but i will be getting one...subaru says u dont need one b/c they want your car to break down later on down the line so you can bring it in to the subaru dealership to get work done to it...
Why not get one..it looks cool as hell also when you walk out of your car and its still running then shuts off like a minute later...
Get one...dont take the risk of not having one..

Of coarse Subaru tells you that you don't NEED to, because when it comes time to replace your turbo because it seized up from not allowing the OIL, (different than COOLANT), to flow, your warranty is up and you have to pay for it yourself. Think about it really hard. You have that turbo winding up past 20,000 rpm and you pull up into a parking lot and then turn the car off, seizing oil circulation to the turbo. Ummm, ya, sounds real good for the turbo. Oh ya, I forgot. It must be one of those new features, like not ever having to change your oil or rotate the tires, or hell, even put gas in it!! In all honesty, you don't need to let the oil circulate if you go to the grocery store, of make a quick trip somewhere. However, if you drive a long distance, or drive really hard, you better wait a minute or two before you turn off your car. That goes with ANY turbo charged car.
