Engine/Power - EJ20T (pre-2006 WRX and JDM) There is replacement for displacement, it is forced induction - OEM 2.0 liter turbo engines in the USDM WRX. 90-94 Legacy Turbo EJ22 turbo engines can also be discussed here.

i would have to disagree. the stock turbo can't handle anything more than 16 at most 17psi (not very safe). the stock turbo is too small (compressor and turbine) to push up to 17psi safely. up to that point it's basically blowing hot air, which is what would cause detonation to your engine due to premature combustion. take this advice, don't even try to boost that high. just buy a bigger turbo. most aftermarket turbos may lag a bit more than the stocker, but it will push far more than the stock one and safely. also, it doesn't matter how much boost you run, but is how you tune it and put it to good use. i think that with just pushing 16psi max and getting your set-up properly tuned will benefit you the most in terms of reliability, power, and safety. why risk blowing up your engine out of stupidity, which is what some guy did on these forums. just remember, "ENGINE MANAGEMENT" and "TUNING" is key to everything

I disagree. The stock turbo can reach 18 psi. I know a docen people running 18 psi at the track with proper tunning for more than 30k miles and haven't had problems. They are getting 12.8sec on the 1/4 mile with only stg 2 mods on stock turbo. I wouldn't try it myself, but it has been done.

They are using stock turbo. I don't know for how long (RPM) they are holding it, but they are definetly going faster.

the ion upgraded stock turbo would be able to handle 18psi of boost with no problem, but not the regular stock turbo, at 18psi like jenisonwrx said, it won't hold boost and basically it will be out of it's peak efficiency. take a look at this thread:

All I can say is that everyone that I talked to that knows a lot about this (my friend is a mechanic for Bell Subaru) says that 16psi is the highest boost you can safely run.

you spent the cash for a WRX, why dont you invest in a turbo upgrade and do it the right way. larger turbo, fuel pump, injectors, etc? yes you can run that much boost, but for how long??? try it and find out. is it worth it? IMO no.

Stock turbo

Thought the stock turbo was pretty much out of it's efficiency range at more than 15.5. I wouldn't run more boost than that with the stock IC. But that's just me.
