Losing boost...(searched)
Losing boost...(searched)
Alright, I got my 2003 WRX yesterday, (no mods), except for a boost guage and a short shifter.
Anyways I searched and I didn't really get a super clear answer.
When I take off my boost will hit full boost right under .1 bar and as soon as I get to 5500 RPM it drops off and usually gets down .5 bar or lower.
Now, a few people are telling me that it should do this while I've read that the stock turbo is too small to hold full boost at high RPM.
So far this happens in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gear. haven't tried it going in 4th and 5th.
I just want to know if this is 100% normal or should I start looking for leaks and take it into the dealer (I still have 10 months left on the factory warranty).
Thanks,
Erik

i was dealing with that issue with my vf34...it could possibly be your stock boost solinoid, im no mechanic, but i fixed my problem with the blitz sbcid boost controller...now the ***er pulls way hard to the redline...again im no mechanic, just my learning experience, except i would lose boost from 3rd and on

i'm dealing with the same thing. didn't notice it until i took the car to thill a couple of weeks. i have a new air filter in the car, so i'm wondering if the cheap filter is causing the issue or if maybe it's a boost leak.

yeah but what caused it. i realize it's the extra load points that are hit in 3rd and 4th that are going to make the loss noticeable but what caused it. could the wastegate be opening too soon? if so could a vacuum test find that out?

With the stock ECU, boost will always taper significantly in the upper RPM's. Even with a propper tune, boost will still taper to about 12-12.5psi by redline because the turbo is no longer effecient beyond that boost level in the upper RPM range.
As far as boost dropping with the vf34, that all depends on the tuner. Most tuners taper boost even with a bigger turbo to take some stress off the turbo and engine internals as well as to add a bit of a safety blanket on pump gas tunes.
Thanks

the reason for the boost dropping off as you get higher in the rpm range is a safeguard in the control unit. subaru does not want you hitting the rev limiter at full boost.
i heard the modified wastegate takes care of this problem without going to a tuner and getting a reflash. but thats only what i read in the ad for the wastegate.
