just got a REX...... first mod?
so I just got a 2004 wrx and want to start modding. What should I do first.
I saw an article on scoobymods.com about removing the intake silencer so that I can hear the BOV and turbo spool up. Is that a good mod to do. Also, if I decide to do it, how do I reset the ECU. On my old car, all I had to do was undo the negative battery terminal for 15 minutes, and voila it was reset. Thanks.

Congratulations on your new Impreza and welcome aboard! The intake silencer removal is not so much a power mod. The only performance gain is that the turbo will spool up a few hundred RPM's sooner; plus you'll be able to hear the BOV and waste gate when you drive. It's not that great of a mod, but it's not harmful either. It's more a matter of personal taste.
And to reset the ECU, disconnect the negative terminal, pump the brake pedal to discharge (I can't remember exactly what sort of electricity at the moment), wait about 30 seconds to a minute, then reconnect. You'll know it worked when your radio station presets are all fudged up. Good luck and again, welcome aboard!

If this is your first "fast" car, here's the list:
Wheels/tires
brake pads, lines, fluid
all the autocross and HPDE time you can get.
When you finally find yourself going "Dang, I just can't get around the track/course any faster!" then go get some power adders. Until you are faster than the car, you don't really need them.

The silencer removal is pretty cool thou.. it doesn't hurt and it's DIY.

Definitely new tires, and wheels if you can afford them. Handling wise, that is probably the best mod you could do. You'd be amazed what these cars can do, rain or shine, with some three season tires on them.

yea as ban suvs noted brakes are a good start simple lines pads rotors would be a big upgrade, i would do the silencer removal, stay away for the 3/16 mod you dont even want to know about it, maybe end links for the rear sway bar? upgraded sway bar? tires alone on the stock wheels would be a big improvement steering bushings is another great mod, after that d worry about motor stuff like a TBE (turbo back exhaust) up pipe and a ecu reflash or cobb AP those are a few thing to look into just remember if you have a lot of go your gonna need a lot of woa

get rid of those all weather donuts.
of all the awesome selling points of these cars
i hate the idea that i have to "skip" the tire part during
my presentation.
one good rule of thumb... that i am planning to use. handling, braking 1st. horsepower 2nd.
oh, and welcome!

Get a good alignment. Many cars are off spec from the factory, mine was. Think about changing systems rather than parts. The suspension system is a good place to start as you can build a learning curve, you get a lot of noticable improvement for the time and money, and you can avoid powertrain warranty issues until the car proves its self. I'd suggest buying suspension upgrades from one source (e.g. whiteline, helix, cobb , perrin, sti prodrive etc.) The parts are designed to work together and you will have less sorting out to do. When it comes to the drivetrain, think about the time and money you plan to spend. If you are not going to pay for custom ECU mapping, then buy an off the self system (e. g. cobb, prodrive etc.) . These systems often are designed for specific engine configurations so the money you spend now on a CAI or etc. may not work with future purchases unless you custom map.
When somebody asks me, "what should my first mod be?"
I ask: "what do you want to do with the car"
If you say drag: power/weight
If you say autoX: I say learn to drive the car first
If you say road race: I say save you're money for now, you're gonna need it
If you say rally: I say buy a second car, you're gonna need it
But fo reals, what exactly you trying to accomplish? If you ask a bunch of people what mods to do to you're car with having no goals for it, you're gonna get a drag racers idea of a mod, an autoXers idea of a mod, a rallycrossers idea of a mod and so on.

a search works wonders.
most old schoolers will tease you for getting ricey things. all i wanted was a BOV, then i started reading and reading and reading, i realized i could buy so much more and save the BOV for later.
you may have noticed that shifting is a bit complicated. short shifter with bushings would help that area.
Suspension/handling has a few routes.
some wheels with good tires, rear sway bar with endlinks.
in terms of power you can bust out a turboback exhaust and some EM.
