Ion Turbo results at Vishnu's
I have some good news and bad news regarding my Ion turbo dyno day. The good news is that I did go to Vishnu’s today. Bad news is that I didn’t tune my car.
Initially, I wanted to have Shiv tune my car using his parameters and his dyno. This information could then be fairly compared to all his other dyno runs. Then people could compare (apples to apples) which turbo (35, 34, 30, FP, Ion etc…) did what.
As good as that sounded, there were still some other things to work out. Let me try to make it clearer. Shiv has a business (Vishnu Performance) and I have a business (I-Speed USA). Vishnu tunes and we tune. We ARE competitors …not, as some would think, sworn mortal enemies.
Because of our business dynamics we both acknowledge that it is probably not the best idea to tune each other’s stuff. There are of course, some liability issues and of course some personal issues.
That all being said, I did go to Vishnu and we did get a few base runs in using my car. I didn’t have my tuning gear with me, so I was unable to tune my car on his dyno.
I personally wanted to thank Shiv for his patience and willingness to help get results that could benefit every Subaru enthusiast. He was more than generous. After all our discussions, he still wanted me to put the car on the dyno and we both wanted to see what it could do.
The results were not mind blowing. The ECUtek map that was in my car was pretty much our base map. I, obviously, need to reload another map and head back to Vishnu (with tuning modules in hand) and take another whack at the Ion turbo.
I will post today’s’ dyno results later.

Here is a base map (at 14-15 psi) vs a stock wrx.
Remember this is on a conversion car with a 2.2 tranny
mods: 565 injectors, jdm up pipe, ion turbo, samco hoses, 3"turbo back, stock IC and untuned ecutek map.

That doesn't look too bad to me for a base map. What I find most impressive is the quicker power (spool) over stock. Also looks like significant improvement in torque #'s. The hp isn't dropping at al like stock. I'm curious on the injectors, do you feel the 565 are necessary for a setup like this? At what point does the fuel pump become an issue?
Also what kind of tweaks to the maps do you envison are necessary (if any)?
Thanks for posting the plots.

The injectors aren't necessary for running stock boost.
Prior to the Ion I was runnning an FP with stock injectors at 16psi. I was seeing %85+ dutycyle. Sometimes hitting %100!
I choose to up the injector size along with the Ion turbo. I am , at stock boost, running about 60% now and I will keep the stock pump.
I have noticed on several cars that the fuel pump becomes more important (necessary) at higher hp ( about 40 to 50hp more than I currently have) levels. I am trying to isolate as many variable as possible to see if I can get a more accurate indication of when a pump IS necessary.
On tuning the ECUtek. One nice thing is....once you dial in the fuel settings, you really don't have fuss with it again. Now, i'll just play with timing, wastegate sensitivty a bit, and a few other things
I will keep you posted as to my findings

It's nice to see some professionalism among tuners. If we can all get along, we can all benefit from all those brains working together instead of against one another.
Thumbs up to Vishnu and I-speed.

Chris, can you comment on the two plots not having torque and HP crossing at the same point? I can't think of why the iON plot would cross at one point, but the stock plot looks to have torque = HP at a higher RPM.
Even if the scaling were such that the Torque and HP scales were different so that they didn't cross at ~5250 they should be the same fo the two sets of data, right?
If I am reading it correctly, it looks like the iON plot has HP = Torque around 5200, but on the stock plot it's around 5800.

The two cars had different gearing. As such, the mph/rpm factor is different between the two.

Since the x-axis looks correct for Chris's car, we'd need the numbers for the x axis on the stock WRX plot to be able to compare the two properly.
Looks like the WRX plot is about 12% higher RPM than it should be.

Perhaps it may just be as easy to superimpose the stock map in a different location? I.e. move the map over to the left a little. just a wild guess.
well, anyway, the OBS is alive again. Finally...!
I am going to try and hook up at a shiv dyno day and run the car again WITH a tuned map
Let's hope that new tranny lasts, lol.
